ECU or Chip upgrade on a D2TD5

I was looking through the receipts of work done that came with my disco. On one receipt it says ECU upgrade $700. I'm wondering if whether its just had a later ecu put in or whether its had a chip upgrade. Is there any easy way of telling what was done?
    Thanks Steve

Pretty sure the ECU's between D2 and D2a are not interchangable without numerous other components also being changed.

Generally the earlier models the ECU is opened and the chip changed to upgrade the performance. With the later models the ECU tune can be flashed on such as by a Nanocom with a new Map file loaded.

    How much Turbo lag?

One of the most obvious things I noticed with a remap was the lack of turbo lag. Foot down, power there. Previously a noticeable lag whilst turbo spooled up.

Thanks guys so the ecu's are not easily interchanged between years, yes?. So I could possibly rule that out "maybe". I feel it does go quite well off the line but unable to judge if there is lag there or not. What I need is maybe someone to take it for a run and see what they think.Although I dont think anyone lives close enough to me

    Thanks Steve

Dare I ask why? If it goes well and your not able to identify lag, I don't see what the problem is for you to be concerned about?

If your ECU number on the outside case begins with MSB then it has a chip replaced. If it begins with NNN it is a later model ECU and has been remapped.

It is possible and not uncommon for MSB ECU's to be replaced with NNN model.

Nah not really a problem I am just curious as to what was done so I know in future. It does go well but I will be towing a heavy van and down the track would'nt mind just a bit more on tap and be good to know what if anything has been done. My mechanic reckons buy the way it drives he thinks it has'nt been done but would be handy to know for sure.

Sorry mate silly question I know, just so I can check, where is the ecu located?. Is it the one behinf the battery?

    Thanks all

The ECU is located behind the battery. MSB is the earlier ECU's and NNN are the later.
If had has been done and it is an MSB then it would mean it's had a chip changed.
If it's been done and it's an NNN then it means that it would have been reflashed.
If you've got an early model vehicle and its got an NNN ECU, then it means someone has swapped it over at some point.
