    TD5 Torque converter

Apparently the old man has a problem with his torque converter in his TD5 (according to the mechanic he took it to in Newcastle). It sometimes won't engage gear when taking off, until high revs. There's also a loud clunk when going from 1st to 2nd, and once when powering down to about 30kms it disengaged gear.

Any idea how much work is involved, and ultimately what sort of cost he'd be looking at?

in not sure the price for a standard tc, but it'll likely cost around the 1000 Mark just to have it installed...

I have similar issues except for the disengagement, but I was thinking more great box than tc.

I paid over a grand for my Ashcrofts heavy duty torque converter from the UK. I'm going to fit it soon so will have a good condition second hand standard unit spare.

The problem could also be the clutch packs being worn out. Give ZF in Sydney a call and describe the symptoms to one of their service people - they will probably be able to give you an idea what could be wrong. Also put a Nanocom or similar on the transmission computer and see if there are any faults registered.

The torque converter would not be the first suspect with those symptoms. But then again if he has professional advice who am I to argue.

Ranga, the most likely suspect is excessive clutch clearances, IE worn trans.

Has it got 200K or so up?

I have to agree with the last two posts. I don't think it would be the converter.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
