    td5 d2 2000 auto. more boost?

just picked up a td5 for a work car. want to my options for upgrades?

so far i know it has a davis ecu remap the rest is standard.

i did just blank off the egr today.

what i want to know is does the davis upgrades bring the boost up or is it still standard? what can be done with boosting?

do these ecu's self tune if fitting bigger exhaust and I/C?.. or do i need to get another fuel map done after mods?

hope I get some replys on this.

What exactly are you trying to achieve?

What's your planned use for the vehicle (realistically)

comming from driving a td42 patrol tunning is simple for boost and fuel.

td5 are all controlled by ecu thus need to know how tunning is done with ecu and over rides with wastgate?

i know davis chips put more fuel in and the change timming.. does the chip do anything for boost?.. standard boost is 15psi max before ecu opens the wastgate and cuts fuel.. can the td5 handle more then 15psi?

i plan on getting a 3inch bump pipe and hi flow muffla. this will increase turbo spool time but will the ecu bring in the fuel to make use of ealy boost.

or Is it just a case of more early boost = more right foot = power felt

Doesn't he already get 420Nm out of a td5 or something??? I really find it hard to believe that you could need or want more in a car like that, and i've heard of them mincing autos with high power outputs...

Maybe im miss lead.. I was told by amv the ecu was done.. Maybe it isnt.. For a reasing for more power... I cant overtake up hills even at 80k speeds 420nm should get me up there for a light rig then a gq patrol.. The chip on the ecu dont have anything on there chip id that its a davis chip.. Doesnt help much..

The td5 doesn't cut fuelling until something like 20psi. 15psi is just the standard setting on the wastegate. You can go over 20psi but it requires a boost box to drop the output of the MAP sensor as the ECU and sensors limit at 5V.

From what I've read most Td5 tuning guru's reckon 2.5" is optimal for the exhaust. I'm sure there are other opinions on this.

If you are seriously chasing power you'll need to look at a VNT Turbo, boost box, intercooler upgrade, and remap.

BTW Tombie is one of the remap guru's on the forum. If he ask a question, it's worthwhile giving a serious answer.

At tombie. My use for the td5 is a work car everday driver and camping trips. I want to know my tuning options. The ins and outs.

At offtrack I have read some where 2.5 size is good enough with maybe a hi flow muffla.

And i did read an option for a boost box. Are there any draw backs with a boost box? Whats a good kit to buy

Probably your best bet is to forget the boost box for a start, you can wind the boost up a bit and get reasonable gains. Then perhaps look at an upgraded intercooler. Boost box is only a necessity once you move to a VNT turbo.

I doubt that with stock intercooler etc you'd have much more than a stage two remap. 420Nm is the output for the Davis fully tuned Td5 - that would be big intercooler, and higher level remapping, sports exhaust, etc. You are probably looking at the lower end of the range with a stockish setup 300Nm or a bit more.

I've got what is apparently a Davis stage two chip in my 2000 Auto, and it goes fairly well for what it is. It certainly isn't gutless.

    cheers

Thanks offtrack.. Know im seeing the issues ok so ill get a bigga cooler and high flow muffla. Then ask for another tune map.. With the uping the boost i just turn the rod in or out a few times yeah? And the ecu will still clip it at 20psi to be safe.

Should i try that now or wait for the othere parts?

Has the ecu been opened? Check the casing, you will see if it has...

If your TD5 is feeling 'flat' then there are other things to be checking first.

However, compared to the Horse and Dray Patrol a D2 can be moving along nicely and feel quite 'comfortable'

Plenty of reading on TD5 mods, but keep it sensible - the Transmission is the limit with chipping and the Auto wont be happy if you punch out too much.

For the record, a TD42 isnt much different in weight to a D2 TD5.

Adjusting the waste gate rod in 1/2 turns only, shortening it to increase the boost level.

Lose the centre muffler, go straight through or to deepen it fit a better flowing box.

Drop the pipe off the turbo and check, some had a flex joint much smaller than the 63mm dia pipe. If yours is one of these, replace the flex joint.

Did you block the EGR or remove it completely?

I'd still do some other checks first...
    - Sticking wastegate
    - Failed or faulty Modulator
    - MAF readings

They TD5 D2s are great vehicles, much quicker than a TD42 (even a moderately tweaked unit)...
