    Electrical Advice Required

My main battery is being continually drained to a point where it will just start the vehicle (D2a) after 3-4 days of standing idle.

I broke out the trusty multi meter and tested all the fuses in both the engine bay and inside the vehicle and found the following

    Internal Fuses
    F3 - LH Headlamp Main Beam = 0.001 Amps
F20 - Diagnostic socket / Radio - Clock memory / Compac tdisc player - Premium ICE / Key interlock unit / Interiorlamps / Passive remobilisation = 0.082 Amps
F21- BBUS / Key interlock / Transfer box / Shifter box / Alarm audible warning = 0.001 Amps
    External Fuses
    F1 - Diesel - ECM = 0.005Amps
    F11 - ABS Valve = 0.3 Amps
    F13 - BCU = 0.03Amps
    Grand Total = 0.419 Amps

    Battery Load = 2.18 Amps

So, all up I have a current draw of 0.419 Amps with the ignition off and key in.

When I check the drain on the battery, I find 2.18 Amps which strikes me as somewhat high. Not the winch or any of the accessories as I disconnected them when testing the current draw. I also checked the current draw where the battery cable joins the fuse box in the engine bay - same 2.18 Amp draw.

So now I'm at a loss as to where to look next - any ideas from the guru's?

    Cheers,

    Franz

What's the charging voltage? I've heard of one case where a faulty regulator in an alternator caused the battery to drain with the key out.

Charging voltage is around 14.5 volts I think. I monitor battery voltage via Nanocom and this ranges between 13.2 - 14.6 volts.

    GOODLUCK
I have never got to the bottom of my power thief issue.
I leave a decent battery charger on my D2 as it can sit weeks between uses.

PS,listen for clicking relays in the underbonnet fuse box, mine clicks,I suspect the computer systems dont go to sleep, hence using power.

Carefully undo the cables off the alternator while monitoring current draw.

    Andrew,

How much current draw are you experiencing?

    Cheers,

Engine off I assume? Can I get to the alternator easily - I've never been down in that part of the engine. From the top or below?

There has been a thread on this before. The abs system draws 300mA (0.3A) when key is off. You will hear it clicking in the engine bay like a cricket.
There is a fix. Best would be to find the thread. I'm away from my pc at the moment so I can't post the link.

(edit) just re read the first post, sorry I see that you have more than the abs draw. As others have said check altinator. The diodes and semiconductors can die and cause issues like this.

Whilst the deeper mysteries of auto electrics eludes me I have found alternators with faulty diodes to be a power draining thief! The 'orrible little beast did what it was designed to do perfectly while the motor was running but parked in the shed it slowly drained the battery if left parked for a week . I only found it when a bearing died in it and found it in the overhaul.
