    D2 v8 woes

Hi all my name is geoff i have disco2 4.0 v8 it seems to have a non rev related knock , i imagine bottom end and when its up to running temp it sounds like a diesel , could be piston slap any way its my first disco and would like to talk to some one in the know. i live on mid north coast of NSW and ideally would like advice on second hand engine swap or what route to take on repairing, i've only had it 8 months and don't have a lot of money but any advice would be great, i would like to fix it as i like the vehicle.
    Thanks in advance. Geoff.

If you mean that the knock occurs all the time related to engine revs and is worse when warm , then the most likely culprit is a loose sleeve moving up and down against the head.
In most cases the engine will mysteriously lose water with no obvious leaks.
This is very common on 4L V8 , and requires a full engine rebuild using flanged sleeves .

I just had another thought, that it is pretty common for the exhaust manifold bolts to loosen causing leaks that sound like a knock. Get a socket and tighten all the bolts before doing anything else and see if the noise changes.

I definately recommend you take it to someone familiar with these engines. Have you dropped the oil to see if there are chunks/big flakes of metal in it? Have you checked oil pressure?

Check Ebay for an engine as recenly there have been some good low kay motors for around 3000. I know this isn`t cheap but it is cheaper than a rebuild. It is a gamble putting in a second hand replacement though.

I was quoted 9000 drive in drive out with a 4.6ltr from a mob in Perth.

Hope you sort it out easily (and cheaply) but it doesn`t sound good

yeah did the oil pressure check, even had sump off removed pick up tube and cleaned screen, no foreign particulates in oil what so ever although engine very tarnished from deposits, high k's i suppose [263,ooo] i was trying to find out detailed info on engine replacements such as if i found a low comp engine whats needed to use it where a high comp motor is, such as mine , like different ecu? Exhaust gaskets have been done and rechecked, no vacuum leaks and even did power test as in work shop manual, good results, no loss of oil or water either. I think i will be selling vehicle.

with that amount of km's and if tarnished means lack of oil changes think about camshaft\lifters.but the amount of work involved in doing all that +the high milage will have to be considered,

yeah thanks for all the input but everyones missing the point i want to know about engine swaps/choices i'll pull the original engine and disassemble later and find out what happened to it then, for now i was hoping to keep mobile with a swap.

Seeing Thet you have a problem with yours, and we have told you that it is common, it seems to me that the only relatively cheap and safe engine to buy is a new short 4L or 4.6L .

Another option may be a rebuilt and flange sleeve short motor from TR spares or import from UK.

You would have to suspect any used engine as having the same problems as yours, and if you buy one you would have to strip down to short engine and pressure test it.

Any other engine such as Gen111 involves much more money and stuffing around.
    There is no magic pill.
