    D2 Transmission/Driveline Troubles

    Hi all,

I have a few driveline/transmission troubles that have surfaced recently. I drive a TD5 Auto Disco 2 with 190,000 km. The problems I have noticed is that the box seems to hold onto gears longer than it should especially 3rd to 4th, sometimes when going from R to D or vice versa it doesn't engage the required gear, I put my foot on the gas to accelerate away it revs slightly then clunks into gear. There is a constant oil leak (brown) that seems to be dripping from the draining plug on the transmission oil sump, I am currently in the process of trying to change the transmission oil although i am struggling to undo the plug on the front of the sump. The next issue surfaced yesterday, I have started to get a vibration through the cabin under light acceleration from around 2000-2500 RPM, then while sitting stationary in neutral with my foor on the brake, if I shift between D and R I get a clunking sound through the driveline this happens everytime I change direction without fail, i'm suspecting front propelor uni-joints from what i have read on here.

I have limited mechanical experience and am currently living in Karratha where they only drive Land Cruisers and Patrols, the mechanics here can charge what they want as there is knowhere else to go and I have already nearly been ripped off a couple of times.

I hope to try and get to the bottom and hopefully resolve these issues myself, any suggestions, tips or advice would be of a great help.

    Cheers

    Tommy

First up, get under and physically check the driveshafts,
look for shiney metal around the uni's, grab the shafts and shake,
    The front unis do fail.
Check both engine mounts, they are fluid filled(yes?) and there is a visual sign when they have failed.
Failure to select is a low fluid level symptom.
Servicing these auto's is simple, even a toyo mech should have no problem.
you can buy filters over the net.

the easiest way to check the engine mounts is use a pencil and put it through the hole in the bottom, it should go in about 10mm or so. If theres something sticking out the hole, they're stuffed. In any case do both mounts at the same time if you can.

As pedro said sounds like your front shaft is gone if your getting a vibe at those revs and the clunk R>N>D and D>N>R. Simple enough fix any mechanic should be able to rebuild it with greasable joints. Its caused by an oversight with the aircon drain.

I serviced mine and it fixed the shifting clunkiness and sluggishness so hopefully thats all it needs. Try Paddock Spares in the UK for the parts as I have found them to be by far the cheapest and fastest delivery. Pretty sure its the sump plug/washer, pan gasket and screen. Then dex2/3 oil to go back in. More then likely its never been serviced but just in case use dex3 as 3 can mix with 2, but if its full of 3, you cant go back to 2 AFAIK.

On the topic of the auto, if you ever go anywhere near mud, make sure you flush ALOT of water through the bottom of the radiator as this is where the auto cooler lives, and it clogs easily. no cooler = hot auto = big $$$

    good luck! hope that helps
