How do I check if my Viscous Coupling is working correctly?
Thanks, not looking to take it off just to see if I need to..
How do I test if it's working?
From what I have read it seems that the Fan will "clutch - up" when a cold engine is first started and you should hear the Air Roar through for about 30 - 60 seconds.
Then the fan will reduce back to a lower speed? Is this right?
Also with the engine cold you should not be able to turn the fan more than a full turn? If you can freely spin the fan when it's cold it faulty?
All pretty correct.
I don't know what you mean by not turn a full turn.
The fan will turn forever as long as you keep pushing it. However it should stop immediately you stop pushing, and be a little gluggy like pushing your hand through custard.
Also , although it means taking it off which is pretty easy once you have practice, a good indicator is if there is evidence of fluid leaking from the front or rear seal.ie dirty crap everywhere or if Ok it will be uniformly dirty..

Turn out that the Viscous Fan was good. However, my radiator was 1/2 gunked up meaning the Bi-Metal coupling was not getting hot enough so the electric fan did the work. The top hose actually split the day i dropped it to have the rad serviced. Very lucky,
Cleaned the rad out, new top hose and thermostat now the Fan is working! Most importantly the cooling system is working propertly.
this exact same thing just happened to me. after replacing couplings etc over the previous months i actually touched the radiator when it was at temp. top of rad, hot, bottom of rad, hot, middle of rad in front of the fan, icy coldinstalled a new radiator & everything is now honky dory
tried rodding the rad but made more holes in the core than it cleared
Not sure about you but it's massive peace of mind to have the Cooling system tip top!. It tool 12 years before it got gunked up an the top hose went. So now i've hopefully set the clock back and should not have any issues!. My motor has only 84k in 12 years so just the age of components rather them having a hard life.
it certainly is![]()
