    Tyre help for newbie

    Hi Everyone,

I bought my first 4WD - a second hand 1999 TD5 - last year which came with almost new BFGoodrich Mud Terrain 235/70/16R tyres. It's come time to replace them and I want some AT tyres, however there are hundreds of choices to choose from!
The majority of my driving is highway (commuting) and country roads. I tow a 2000kg horse float reasonably regularly.

Can you help me out and point me in the right direction in regards to brands, model and sizing I should be looking at? Also, what type of cost I should expect - I am aware that I am the perfect sterotype to get ripped off (female, uni student, first 4wd etc) and would REALLY like to avoid that!

    Thanks! Hannah

You'll get lots of different opinions here!
I've got stock sized Pirelli Scorpions. A good tyre for everyday driving and just a little bit extra bite for the occasional offroad.
My advice is to stick with known brand names, buy what you can afford, monitor the pressures constantly, rotate them every 10000km service and they'll look after you.
Let us know what you buy and for how much.
    Cheers
    Craig

    Disco Emu is right

Disco Emu is right - one of the areas that evoke lots of differing opinions on AULRO is asking for tyre advice. However, like Disco Emu, Pirelli ATRs or perhaps Maxxis are what I would recommend.

Pirellis ATRs are going to be my next purchase for tyres (currently have Michelin that came with the vehicle, have had Maxxis 751 in the past. Great tyre for the price - the 700 ATs would suit.)

    Horses 4 Courses

Getting tyres for your car is as much of a personally objective decision as what car do you buy/have bought so recommending a tyre is difficult.

I am in a family partnership involved in cattle/grazing in central and northern Queensland, we currently have 4 4X4's (3 X Nissan Patrol, 1 Defender) and have run nothing but Goodyear Wranglers (MTR's except for the defender that has Duratrac's as it does a bit more highway running)for well over 10 years as we found nothing stands up as well in the side walls. We have a few brand name tyre's sitting around the shed with not many km's done but a big tear in the side wall, however these are not suited to your driving conditions but there are many tyres in the Wrangler line up and I would have no problems recommending them, maybe the AT/SA would be more suitable and if your not in a hurry Beaurepairs and Goodyear run sales occasionally (4 for price of 3).

    Cheers,

    Hugh

    tyre choice

You could also consider Coopers. I have had them on my jeep for years and can"t ware them out, but Hugh's previous comments are hard to go past.

Can also recommend Goodyear duratracs, they run nicely on and off road. Mine are wearing well at 20k

Pirelli scorpion AT's are a super tyre, 4wd tyre of year last year.

But you can't get them in R16 any more.

If you are sticking to R16 you have to go the ATR, I did and am equally impressed as the AT although they are definitely not a mud tyre.

    May you choose wisely grasshopper.

I would suggest that whatever make of all-terrain tyre you choose, it should be a light truck (LT) construction. Especially if you're regularly towing a 2 Tonne horse float. Personally I have Bridgestone Dueler 694's in 265/70/R16LT.
