John mine failed in a simalar fashion, your not alone on this one.
It has happened to a few and as long as you don't try to drive it the transmition seams to survive, mine has.
After the revs raised I pulled over tried reverse(no go) then shut the motor down to find the leak.

This is where some confusion comes in..
Mine fell apart at the swage, the rubber line blew off the steel line.
I've heard of the rubber section splitting and the odd steel line cracking.
I havn't heard of the conector to the cooler failing, but I do stand to be corrected.

I removed both my cooler pipes(fidily but doable with out pulling any major parts out).
Sent them to the local hydraulic repair shop and had it repaired.
Happy with the result and I know it's right now.

To give you an idea of what we're talking of have look at this from Urban Panzer.
Mine failed in exaclty the same way.

Every D2 Auto owner will have to replace them sooner or later .We have two D2 Autos and have replaced on both . One blew off at the pipe to hose join and emptied the box, the other I replaced because the join was loose at the pressing although not leaking . Basically the rubber hose shrinks with age and it was never a very tight pressing because the the pipe is so thin.

For thread reference, alloy weld on JIC connectors are available from Motorsport Connections in Seven Hills (NSW). You'll need to ID the size with your hose guy first and then source. They are pretty cheap.
