Thread: Td5 turbo heat shield

Mine was really tight as well. I thought it would snap before it let go, but it finally released. I was ready for the snap to happen. Perhaps another cycle of pentrating spray followed by cooling it with some freezing spray, such as Jaycar's NA1000 about $18 a can??

I put some copper antiseize on it before reassembly, so that next time it should be easier to undo. I also use antiseize on wheel nuts etc

Ryan, I had the 10mm bolt with a rounded head, so I pried back the heat shield so I could get an open ended spanner on to it but breaking the bracket in the process.

I welded the bracket back together and am now going to slot the hole in the bracket so that I just need to loosen the bolt - However I am also going to replace the 30mm? long bolt with a stainless bolt 110mm long! The reason is so that the bolt head stocks out just past the hole at the back of the heat shield. The idea is that I will have double nuts (locked together) where the head of the original bolt was so that it will 'lock' the heat shield into place.

If I want to take the heat shield off in the future, I will just loosen the SS bolt (easy to get to) and then just lift the heat shield out of the way.

Use a sharp wood chisel and hammer to shear off the pop rivet heads facing the firewall the cover will fall off gives good access to tackle bolt.

Thanks that should solve my problem. I can then reattach the shield with new rivets or small screws.
I was considering drilling out the rivets but obviously the drill wouldn't get to the back two rivets.

The two 8mm bolts weren't a problem but the 10mm bolt won't budge and I put considerable force on it. I would have thought the bolt head would have sheared off, but no.
I tried soaking with Q20, that didn't help.
As it goes directly into the turbo housing I don't want to put too much force on it, just my luck I'll split the turbo in two.

Unless anyone has some other suggestions, as much as I don't want to I am thinking I will grind/cut the shield off.
