There is a practice becoming more and more common now of fitting the complete HID projector into non-HID headlights. This helps ensure the HID light output is proper. If anyone was considering retro-fitting-HID, this would be the only approach to consider.

...... and do not to forget to install head light washers and Head Light leveling mechanism - apparently only this makes HIDs legal.

A family member did the above HID upgrade in his Disco II and attracted the attention of the boys in blue in the Victorian country town where he lives however fortunately head light washers and Head Light leveling is standard equipment / options on Discos (the wiring is all there ready to go)

Oh yes Constable!! the HL leveling actuators and switch are in the mail sir Well .... at least they were very shortly afterwards

I looked into doing HID's, heard stories from people who had ordered conversion sets from overseas, had them turn up and werent the advertised wattage.

Ive ended up buying some Philips H4 Extreme visions instead. Will befitting them this week to see how they go. Cost $50 off an aussie supplier on ebay.

Gary, if you reread onebob's post it was quoting mine which was regarding fitting HID projectors into non-HID headlamps, so this would provide the appropriate reflector for HID.

It maybe that the mighty Discovery reflectors are more robust , and it maybe that my customers fitted cheap HID's out of China , but I would like to make other readers aware of this possible safety issue.

Now that is very strange. I have 55w hids fitted in my defender, both headlights and spotlights( offroad use only , of course!! :P) and they run much much cooler than standard bulbs, as in able to hold hand on lens after 5 min on parked. Also have 35w hids fitted in the farm quad and the farm 2 wheelers and in my road bike (GTR1000) and the same thing, all run much much cooler.
But I have only used kits sourced within Australia, so that may be the difference. And as the GTR has air leveling rear shock it has to be legal!!
And the Deefer has rear coilrite airbags so it may qualify as well HAHA!!

Your GTR may have self levelling but where are your headlamp washers? As you need both to be compliant on low beam, High beam can have HID without sls or washers.

Defer won't comply as it must be automatic levelling
