    Exhaust Mods to TD5

    Gday,

Im looking at doing some mods to the disco atm and the exhaust is the first thing on my list. Its a disco 2 2001 TD5 completely stock but has a chip in it for a bit of punch. I do plan on doing some camping etc but also will be towing a Ve commodore with it.

ive been reading into 3" turbo back exhausts. But also i have seen people just deleting the centre muffler.

Opinions and advice will be much appreciated.

    Hey Aaron

I'll be removing the centre muffler soon'ish and simply replacing with a straight through pipe. Plenty off positive feedback here as it helps the turbo spool up a bit faster and reduces turbo lag (a little). A few here say that it will produce a drone under load ... most will say that it's only mildly louder than stock. Quotes I've had for this job are around $200 ... some guys here have had it done for under $100.

As for the 3" ... that's a whole new can of the proverbial.

Good luck and let us know what you do!

    Cheers

    Craig

2.5" is large enough diameter pipe. No need for 3".
The issue comes from the restrictions in the system. Get rid of the current cat converter, mufflers and resonators and replace with free flowing performance units (the noise in the back is horrible without a center muffler) and also look at the flexible joint in the front pipe from the turbo and this has a reduced internal diameter and should be replaced with a larger one. Reducing the restrictions in the exhaust system will give you positive effects in performance.

Just curious I would have to look at cheapest option I can atm, to remove centre muffler does it give much more go? doing this does it mean it will use more juice? and apart from being a bit louder is there any drawbacks to doing this?
    Thanks

There's four main restrictions in the system - the flex joint, the cat converter in the front pipe, the center muffle and the rear muffler. Removing one may help a bit, but there's still going to be the other three which need to be removed/reduced to get the full gains. Depending on which models you went with, I would expect to pay around $250.00 to $400.00 for all the work to be done at an exhaust shop (larger flex joint supplied and fitted, cat converter removed and hot dog fitted, center muffler replaced with high flow straight through model, and rear resinator replaced with hot dog). Either way, modifying the standard 2.5" exhaust would be cheaper than a brand new 3" which you were considering. It's still one of the cheaper performance modifications, it only gets more expensive - tune, larger intercooler, VNT...

If your looking for a cheap performance modification, the only one I can think of for the TD5 is the EGR removal. Do this first if you haven't already.

As to how much noise just removing the rear muffler will make depends on the individual vehicles condition and what other devices are fitted in the system. On my vehicle, with no center muffler, it was horribly loud for back passengers, but my cat converter and rear resinator had been replaced with hot dogs and the flex pipe was replaced with a larger one.

I have the Taipan 3" system on mine and its a work of art. I thought it was noisy when it was first fitted but now it sounds to me no different to what it used to sound like. But I also have a few extra tricks up my sleeve................!!!

    Hello,
If you have a stock turbo then stick with the 2.5 inch it is best size for the motor, remove cat and maybe center muffler, yes it does drone a little with the center muffler gone.

If you have a VNT then a 3 inch is the way to go much better.
    My 2 cents

Out of interest Ian, why do you believe 3" for the VNT?
