is there a problem?
I note that there is no external filter fitted. The only filter being part of the intank fuel pump.
Is it possible to remove and clean this filter?,
or is it necessary to replace the fuel pump?
is there a problem?

Well I suppose you could change it, the thing is buried inside the bucket attached to the pump!
Remember the pump on the D2 like many vehicles of this ilk, only pumps enough to feed the fuel rail/engine demand. This is directly opposite to the D1 which has a return system and pumps much more fuel and needs a filter.
Living in dusty climates (you blokes wouldn't know about that would you!!!) with about 20% humidity, dust/fine grit (silica) gets into the fuel simply by opening the cap and filling at a petrol station. Often overlooked (is that over here anyway) when the fuel tanker delivers fuel to the underground storage some dust always finds its way in and in short you buy fuel and suspended dust!
On D1's and old Rangies the line filter needs to be changed every 3 to six months, else here in Colorado anyway, it starts to choke the fuel flow, but on the D2 and Bosch p38's the pump assy seems to handle it until eventual failure at about 150 K miles. Opening the pump inside the bucket in most cases shows that the contamination seems to dwell inside the bucket dead zones
As Pedro has asked --do you have a symptom suggesting restricted fuel flow?
In any case having been on a course on fuel systems recently as a refresher, it is advised by the pump makers to thoroughly clean the tank during pump replacement wiping the interior out with shop towels.
Will this be of any help Collins and remember a good Iowa farm boy comment--if it aint broke don't fix it!
Good advise sometimes even to a Pom like me!

Thanks to those that responded. No, or maybe I should say unsure, however after spending an enjoyable afternoon in Alien's company, now almost sure that the problem I have is related to a failing CKP. Will place order in around 12 hrs for a new unit.
I am unsure of history of vehicle, previous owner promised to supply full service history, however it was not forthcoming and after 3 months of follow up request finally gave up on it.
I have been experiencing some problems with engine simply stopping, no faults indicated, as though no spark or no fuel. Hence Q re fuel filter - thinking was that fuel flow/pressure, if filter blockage, may have fallen below lower limit causing shut down.
In retrospect, considering a few other items, eg intermittent miss, rough running esp when cols & start/run problems & Aliens wisdom & AULRO posts most probably CKP.
Will advise outcome after new unit fitted.
Yes there is.
Visited "Good Oil" but did not find it all that helpful. Actually discussed searching of posts with Alien. It might be advantageous to those, including me, unfamiliar with the forum if "Good Oil" had an item on best search methodology.
Thanks
