Looking at buying a d2 for daily driver/towing
As the title says I'm looking for a d2 to tow my comp truck d2 and car trailer weighs 3140kg without spares and wondering if a disco would be up to the task i know they are rated to 3.5 but how well do they go with such a heavy load. what would be the better option a v8 or a Tdi/td5
Thanks in advance

There are guys on here that tow 3t caravans with their D2s. I couldn't tell you what's modifications ( if any ) they've made.
I tow a 1.5t trailer with my (once stock) D2 manual ... Fine on the flat and small hills but once you hit a decent hill it's very slow going and you can forget about overtaking!
I've recently upgraded the ECU to give another 20-30% more torque plus a few other mods to help out and am looking forward to the difference!
Maybe the V8 guys can give you some more options too!
Best of luck.

A chipped Td5 manual would be the best thing for the job if you're looking at D2's even with 420Nm you will be slow on the hills!!
But you'll always get there

Its surprising what the V8 will tow. My D1 auto V8 has towed 3.75 tonn but it was slow. I have towed a 2.3 tonn dual axle road van on deep sand with my V8 D2 and it did it well, and I regularly tow a 2 tonn Seafarer Vagabond with my D2,which has 31 in tyres, but realistically you are pushing it big time for comfortable towing with any D2 with that size especially over distances typically needed to get to comps.
Cheers

The furthest I would be towing the car is to orange for toperi and possible Queensland later down the track. Not to worried about going quick 100km on the flat I'd be more than happy with. More after reliability

At the moment I can get about 80kms on the flats and as slow as 40kms on a decent hill in my 80 series so I'm used to going slow lol

Statistically the V8 has more torque.
Just the fuel bill! That said you could pick up a decent low K's V8 cheaper that a high k's TD5.

^this.
Chip, EGR removal, larger intercooler are all things to consider for heavy towing.
Also if it's an auto an extra trans cooler.
