    Tyre size vs lift

    Is there an optimal tyre size for a two inch suspension lift? I've been told that a 265/75 x 16 will fit under my disco but will I effectively lose articulation because the larger tyre is going to inhibit the suspension travel?
    It seems a bit of a catch 22, larger tyre less travel or more travel smaller tyre?

    Ahhhh, someone's telling porkies. 265s will fit No problems, maybe just a little steering lock adjustment, but definitely no loss of suspension travel.
    No fender cutting or bending required either.
    I have MTZs which are a chunky 265/75/16, no lift and no problems.

    If you have a look at td5inside's d2, you will see he has a 2" lift, trimmed fenders with 50mm flares and runs 285/75/16 tyres.
    I know of other d2s set up like this also with no loss in articulation and no rubbing.
    The flares used are not the really large ones as made here in oz, but the smaller overseas aftermarket ones..the flexiflares brand....so not that much trimming required.

    When I had my tyres fitted, the "specialist 4wd" store was adamant that the tyres would rub like crazy.....they claimed they had done many d2s and thats how they knew that the bigger tyres wouldn't fit....they were wrong as I already knew....I had to talk them into fitting the tyres.....red faces I think...haha.
    Do an image search on google and you will find many pictures of d2s with 32s showing heaps of articulation.

    As said no loss of articulation with 32's.
    Some wider ones may rub on the control arm at full lock, my KM2's in a 265 do.
    Some loss of turning circle is reported too.
    Also they don't fit with the factory bumper, a bull bar cures this.

    I ran this size in a Cooper before doing my suspension with no hicups.
    The KM's touch because of the side lugs.

    Just recently fitted 265 75R 16 MT's to my D2 with no suspension lift, have had no worries with rubbing or articulation on and off road. In the future I plan on fitting a 2inch lift as you have done to improve the ride of the vehicle off road and also its travel.

    As far as big tyres go, don’t be put off by the bigger sizes as that is the only thing that raises your diff of the ground. The bigger the tyre the more clearanceyou have!

    I would recommend 265 75R 16 for sure!

    With a 2inch lift and some decent rubber you can go just about anywhere!

    I only rub on the control arm, the loss of turning circle is because the tyre can't turn as ar as it used to before. If you want to stop the rubbing, simply adjust the stops. I haven't worried about it though.
    I personally don't have any rubbing issues on any other part of the car, including the bumper, both on or off road. I am running standard rims and cannot vouch for the aftermarket rims which push the tyres out further, and therefore increase the arc of travel. There may be more rubbing in this situation, but not with standard rims. This is all without a lift, so increasing the height by 2 inches will only be better.

    I'm sure that where ever you live, there will be someone who has 32s who will let you check them out...ask around.

    logic tells me it should not make any difference, but are we talking about 7 or 8 inch wheels?

    265/75's work on 7" rims but if your read the blurb are ideally suited to 8" rims.

    Mine are 7s, but the 8s are the same offset, so the rim is 1/2 inch each way, this makes all but no difference whatsoever.
    If the whole difference was out, or in, then the arc of travel of the wheel during steering would be different, and may/may not hit other things.....as per my reference to aftermarket rims in my previous post.

    I intend to get the Zu rims 16x8, but not until I get the suspension lifted though, as the offset on these whilst legal, will cause rubbing at the standard height I believe.

    Thanks guys, it's reassuring to know that they'll work ok.
    Now to work out what tyre to run, would love to run M/T but as I use this car every day I don't think they'll last to long, but I still want to go bush in the car and still be confident that I'm going to get where I want to go.
