Towing in 5th Gear DII TD5

Can anyone advise if it is OK to tow a 1.8T van in 5th gear on a Disco Ser II TD5?

depends on the drag of the van.,

at low throttle applications you'll be fine.

cog down prior to hills and for acceleration purposes.

I tow a 1.5t trailer in 5th gear ... I try and keep the revs above 2000rpm ... no problems.

The engine will do it, but he gearbox will not like it. It will be ok for a while then you will eventually get issues with the lay gear either at the input end or you will have issues where 5th comes off. The box will last longer with good fluids and a good cooler.

The rattler manual has the best top gear ratio for towing,,
    around 2000rpm at 63mph,,
    the V8 needs around 1825 for 61
and the V8 auto is around 1800.

maybe I just need a rattler 5 speed

It depends how fast you're going, at 110 you will need 5th gear, drop it back when the motor labours, basically just drive it like normal (with regard to dropping back when it labours, just kick it back a touch earlier and try and keep on boost, when you come off boost you'll kill it) a lot of people tow a lot more than that with Td5 manuals (myself included) and have never had a problem. Though if your car has a worn main shaft it is most likely to strip when you are in a high gear tackling a hill with a load on the back, so beware of that.

But by all means go for it!!

Treat 5th gear like any other - if it starts to load up change down.

    Warning Graphic Content

for all you fifth gear towers, this is just the input side of the box. Where fifth comes off the gear is smaller,
