steering damper
Just looking at replacing mine at 250K as part of an overall suspension upgrade. Springs are sagged and looks like shocks and damper are all originals.
I've noticed that Tough Dog have Return to Centre dampers. These have a spring over the damper which must push the damper back to the neutral (straight ahead) position.
Does anyone know if these offer any advantages/ disadvantages over a conventional hydraulic damper?

I have been reading up on these both on this forum and numerous other 4WD forums.
From what I have read the following points continually have come up:
The quality of the damper itself is poor. A lot have died early. The issue is that it is a small bore damper due to the spring being fitted over the top.
It takes more force/effort to turn the steering wheel as you are compressing or extending the spring (depending on which way you are turning the wheel).
Many have expressed concern on the effect on other components in the steering system due to the forces of the spring.
There is also concern about them masking other issues in the steering system. It's often stated that they were originally designed for Toyotas and Patrols due to the lack of adjustment in the castor after fitting a bit lift.
As I said, the above is not from my personal experience, but from reading others over the last few weeks whilst I considered the purchase of one.
I ended up with a Bilstein unit instead - dirt cheap to purchase from the USA. I have been happy with it. But I have also read others concerns that the Bilstein can cause the vehicle to feel like it wan't to turn one direction more than the other.

Ditto that about the RTC damper . Go Bilstein or better still Terrafirma .
