    Electric Wing Mirror Repairs.

    G'day AULROians

    The passenger mirror on my 2003 D2 isn't working properly... basically, it will electronically move down and inwards, but not up or outwards. very annoying when you're towing and want to move the mirrors...

    I removed the mirror in an attempt to figure out what was going on, and whilst i succeeded in taki ng the assembly off the body of the car, i can't actually get into the mirror itself.

    i tested all the voltages/continuity across the terminals in the multiplug and only got nomimal readings. (0.3v) so i assume there is some form of transistor setup going on inside the mirror housing....

    ANYWAY, can anyone shed some light on this? is there more i can do or should i be looking at biting the $165 bullet?

    have a look at the switch,perhaps spray some contact cleaner on it,it may be possible to swap the wires to rule out the switch.

    To get to the motor, pop the mirror glass off. The motor assembly is held on to the housing by 2-3 screws.

    I fitted power fold mirrors to my D2, and once the were on I found one side had very notchy movement and the other would move out but needed assistance to get it to wind back.

    I couldn't really see damage to the gears and tracks but they were clearly the issue. I ended up removing the motors from my old mirrors and transplanting them and one mirror housing onto the power fold mirrors.

    The mirror motors look pretty similar to other I've seen around. Would be interesting to see if they were a standard item.

    yeah, i thought i might take the driver's side one off, and whack the multiplug from that side into the passenger mirror, see if my results are any better.

    Thanks for the know-how. i wouldn't have guessed that....

    anyway, yeah. if the mirrors are standard, even across rovers, it'd be a lot easier to find parts, especially on a tight budget.

    ok, so the passenger mirror works in the drivers side multiplug, so it/s not the mirror... So, wiring loom or the switch? i'm gonna see if i can take the panel that the switch is mounted on. If it's not in the workshop manual tho i'll probably need some help. from there i should be able to see if there's anything amiss behind that panel, and i've already lined up a replacement switch:

    I have a similar problem with my pass. mirror. It moves up,down,out but not in. I have changed mirror assemblies complete, changed the switch and it still is the same. I am suspecting a wiring fault. Just havent gone there yet If I get around to it will keep you in the loop. I doubt it will be the control switch, if it were I suspect the mirror would not work at all like it does?

    i've discovered a couple of great doccuments that are really starting to help.
    firstly, this doc. that has descriptions of all the electrical circuits and how they should work:

    The second has electrical diagrams, which have been immensely helpful to me:

    Here's an outtake of that doccument, relating only to wing mirror motion

    Quite comprehensive, i think you'll find.

    I am beginning to suspect the wiring loom between that mirror and the rest of the car has gone awry, but for the grand total of $15 AUD, i'm happy to foot the bill of a new switch just to be sure.

    i opened the switch casing too, and that thing is confusing as all hell (as you can probably see) although i'm beginning to get the hang of it now.
    I might try doing a 'manual override' by poking wires into the mutliplug on the switch end, but i've already blown one fuse doing this so maybe as a last resort (or when i get more fuses)

    Those two PDFs are taken from the RAVE cd which also includes the MY2000 wiring diagrams. I have no idea how anyone could hope to work on the d2 electrics without access to the electrical library and circuit diagrams.

    I agree with you Offtrack, just blind leading blind trying that. And as for "Poking" wires at random into a multiplug, well I hope there a large store of fuses available, if not more!
    As I said I have not looked further as I have not had time to study the wiring or the RAVE and wiring diagrams are not my forte at the best of times.

    I must get myself one of theese RAVE cd's....

    The poke and pray does not bode well for my disco's internals methinks.

    also, i am 'alledgedly' studying electrical engineering as part of my degree... and i can barely understand theese diagrams!
    still beats the scattergun approach
