Hi mate, we did the Cape this year in a '97 V8i. Our mods were just a 2in lift, Xrox Bar, snorkel and new tyres on standard rims. We were towing an off road camper. We were in company with a Nissan also towing and a well modified 100 series cruiser that wasn't towing. We also had a Disco 3 join us for the Tele Track section. We went everywhere the 100 serie went although he got through a few spots easier than we did at times.
In realtion to fuel consumption,,,,,,,, I was disapointed with my fuel economy until we left Weipa and went to Chilli Beach via the Frenchmans Track and then on to Coen. The 100 series took 100 litres and the Disco 107 litres but we were towing an he wasn't.
We had new Jokohama Geolanders on standard rims and they were great. Muddies would have helped a few times but the tyres we had always got us through.
I had occasion to drive the 100 series for about 50km on some corrugations and was sure glad to get back into the Disco.
We had a decent set of spotties and never once turned them on.
We carried a bit of spare fuel on the camper but could have done the trip without it.
The UHF was worth it weight in gold, not just for chatting amongst our group but also to others on the road.
Have a great trip, it's well worth it.
If you get the chance, go to Virylia Point/Beach, the track in is crappy but the detour is well worth the effort. It's a great spot for a cpl of nights fishing and relaxing.
    Cheers, Rick.
