What pin connections on OEM radio?

As noted in another thread, I intend buying a new JVC kd-sd636 head unit. After some research I also wanted to buy a PC99-X32 LANDROVER DISCOVERY 01 - 04 STEERING STALK CONTROL ADAPTOR + PATCH LEAD from Liquid ICE 2008 Ltd in UK so I can use the steering wheel remote controls. However, their web-site and an email indicates we need to clarify if we have either the BMW Round Pin connection or the Flat Pin Quadlock connection on the rear of the OEM unit. I assume its the latter but I don't know what either of them looks like. Does anyone know? Mines the base model MY04 manual with CD AM/FM head unit.

I'm wrong again (just ask my wife). Not the quadlock but the ISO 10487. Same link reference, I just read it more closely.

The ISO -> Headunit connectors with integrated steering remote adapter is a fantastic idea.

They are made by a mob called Autoleads so will be available from other vendors too.

    cheers

Yes, if I understand correctly, it just fits between the new head unit and the existing harness without the need to cut wires or supply a new power supply, which the other two I looked at, Axxess and SWI-Jack appeared to require. Not completely sure of the connector yet though as when I enter my model disco it sends me to the BMW round pin. Bit confusing but I'm working on it.

The one with the BMW Round pins is wrong. I think what is probably needed is the PC99-X30 which is for Disco 99-01 with the Alpine OEM head unit. This gives you ISO -> ISO which matches the D2 loom but you'll still need an ISO -> Headunit adapter.

    cheers

Just to further complicate matters there are two additional interfaces for the Disco. You have to pick the correct on as the steering controls are specific to each, apparently. These two seem to be for the D1 however:

    PC99-X08 Disco with Clarion OEM
    PC99-X14 Disco with Philips OEM

After more searching, I found this excellent website showing how to make the wiring connections to put a new head unit and remote steering control unit together:

Connecting After Market Head Unit Guide.

Its not the same for my unit but the sequence is there. Thus we must have had a different wiring harness to UK. I assume that the head unit comes standard with ISO connectors. My wiring harness does too. So the required remote controller is PC99-X14 which is supposed to be for a Range Rover. This unit combines the wiring adapter and remote controller wiring adapter into one, so all you need is the remote PC99-X14 and the patch lead.

    I hope!

An update. I am still trying to get it all working and am so frustrated.

Got my KD-SD636 head unit for Christmas, bought the PC99-X30 and JVC patch lead from UK.

The head unit came with a harness adapter but the non JVC end was just 16bare end wires. I didn't want to crimp or solder 16 lugs onto the ends, to be individually pushed into the ISO plug that came with the steering wheel harness, so I bought a JVC to ISO harness interface adapter.

First trap. Despite the description that says "fits all latest JVC head units" the adapter supplied has the wrong plug on the JVC end. Send back, get type 2. Connect everything together, head unit works well and reception is brilliant, no more problems, however, can't get steering wheel controls to work, no matter what I tried.

The information that came with the head unit is basic at best and doesn't explain anything. You need to already know what to do. So I email the uk supplier of the steering wheel adapter. Says that the patch lead not only comes with the standard 1.5mm jack which I understood had to be put into the rear auxilliary input, but also a orange wire with round crimp plug. This wire has to be connected to one of the wires in the harness to make the controls work.

Trap 2, the harness interface adapter comes with only 15 wires not 16 and is missing the wire to connect to the orange wire on the steering wheel adapter.

So now I am seeing if I can get an ISO plug that I can wire up with the harness adapter that came with the head unit. What a PITA.

The easy part was installing the mounting sleeve into the opening in the dash. I had to adapt an M4 screw to be able to fit the rubber 'finger' at the back of the original head unit onto the new one.

I know the next problem will be, when all the harnesses are connected, I won't be able to fit all the cables behind the head unit. Tricky as it is now without the steering wheel adapter installed.

If anyone is interested, I can provide photos of the bits, etc.

Hooray! All's right with the world - the steering wheel controls work! Finally bit the bullet and cut off the downstream ISO plug on the PC99-X30 and soldered on the wires from the harness that came with the head unit. And its better than before because the mode button now cycles through AM/FM/CD/etc rather than just the AM/FM on the original.

    Congratulations Mundy

I'm looking at replacing my OEM unit later in the year and was hoping to do it myself. If you have any pics to share of how you sorted out the steering wheel controls that would be awesome.

    Cheers

    Steve
