    Where's the crack/weep located.
If it's in one of the cell dividers, maybe it's coming from the cap and running down one of the valleys that separate the cells, so it looks like a crack but may be the cap weeping?

    photos?

Like Daz said, it'll be very hard to fit a D1 cap onto a D2 tank, as the threads are different.

D1 cap is void within it's underside(call it female) and has what appear to be two valve looking parts (just to marked circles) built into the inside of the cap.
D2 OTOH, has a male appendage looking valve/relief system under the cap that protrudes past the threads, so the threads are hard to see..
The comment that the new cap and old cap look different is a bit of a worry tho, they shouldn't look too different other than the colour of the male appendage looking valve part(on a D2 cap).
I have one that's yellow, and another that's brown(fawn) coloured valve.
Otherwise they both look identical. Both caps marked 140 on the top black outer part. Both have the same 140 marking on the centre of the coloured valve protrusion too.

Unless any 'Landrover' logo is underneath, neither of mine have any LR marking on them .. I assume both are the originals from day one on each car.
The yellow bottom would be genuine see pick , the brown is aftermarket.

    Same Experience

I have recently busted two expansion tanks. Last one lasted 5 months before I noticed a leak. (Purchased in late August 17, cracked Jan 18)

Cracked in exactly the same place as the previous one. Down near the bottom hose.

Also non-genuine and I'm pretty sure Britpart. I have advised the supplier.

Looking at everyone else experiences I'm inclined to think the expansion tanks are poor quality.

    It's a Disco V8 2003.

    Regards
    Andrew

Lots of problems with D2 expansion tanks at the present, Thus we no longer stock or sell them. The problems is every one wants cheap these days and suppliers are catering for the demand hence all these cheap quality products are coming on the market. You rent them now.

Too true, $200 odd for genuine, while Expensive , isn't that bad when you consider 15 years life, not to mention the consequences of a cheapy letting go.

While in Autobarn today I saw kits to repair expansion tanks - looked a bit like a fibreglass repair kit. No idea if they are any good or not but could be worth a try.

I did an emergency repair on and expansion tank once with a plastic fuel tank repair kit, it contained a 2 part putty you kneaded and also had some fibreglass mesh in it to bed in and reinforce. It got me out of trouble

Have to agree. I have just purchased a genuine one. Easy enough to swap out but the frequency is the killer with the non-genuine item. Replaced the non genuine under warranty which is good.

People want cheap every day. If not, it needs to exhibit value for more. However this is most likely determined from experience hence my predicament.

    Cheers

    Brand New Genuine Installed

Replaced the aftermarket with a genuine expansion tank today.

Pretty sure my problem will be behind me. The aftermarket part is just not worth the hassle.

When replacing the parts I decided to weigh them to see if there was any difference in weight.

There's a country mile in difference. The genuine part weighs 652 grams. The aftermarket part weighs 550 grams and this was with a minor amount of fluid so around the 548gram mark.

Simple to assume either of the following:

The density of the plastic in the aftermarket is lower or the wall thickness is thinner. Both are the same dimensions.

    Regards
    Andrew

    I had the same problem
Tried genuine tank and genuine cap, no difference, few months latter it cracked also.
I got an aluminium one made up since allisport only make them for the D1
Also got it made with a standard cap fitting, so I get more options with cap pressure choice.

I also noticed after looking at the rave about the flow of coolant, and to my surprise realised that the over pressure or relief actually goes back to the radiator via that smalll plastic hose, which everyone has had replaced by now.
My question is then, that it cannot adequately release the pressure, as it is going back into the radiator,, which is already at full pressure???
That maybe why I think this issue is occurring, that they cannot properly vent when needed.

I have had my ali tank on for 6 months with a 18 psi cap, and all good, bye bye plastic!

Maybe the problems are Not only the expansion tank But are from the cooling system not working properly and running at excess pressure all the time that is causing the tanks to fail.
The Genuine Tanks last for a very long time and replacing them with a cheap aftermarket tank is only a stopgap repair at best So sticking with the original LR tank as a replacement makes good sense.
If my expansion tank failed I would also be looking at the rest of the cooling system to see WHY it failed in the first place and would replace it with a genuine LR tank.
