I just read this in an article about the D2.....
"The locking centre differential was still fitted until early 2001, although the linkage to operate it was not attached, as Land Rover believed that the traction control and newly-developed Hill Descent Control would render it redundant. The actual locking mechanism was removed in early 2001"
How do I know if my May 2000 Built D2 has the lock? It was registered 2001, but built May 2000.
Can I now add the linkage if so how?

There is an approximate VIN range for the cut off in this sticky under the MY2001 entry:MY2002 D2's don't have the CDL internals. The last few months of the MY2001 also missed out on the internals. The model years run from august/september of the previous calendar year. MY2002 runs from roughly August 2001 through to August 2002. MY2001 vehicles built from around April/May onwards don't usually have the CDL internals.

The date range is based on forum members reports of fitted/not fitted. The period from mid April to 24 May 2001 has no reports and the change between CDL equipped and no CDL occurred somewhere between those two dates. If you can PM me your VIN it should help refine the change over dates once you determine if the cdl internals are fitted.
You'll need to physically check for the shaft on the top of the front of the transfer case for the CDL shaft or check the case serial number. The presence of the shaft is probably the most reliable means of checking.

Looking at a D2, using the VIN, I may have the CDL
SALLTGM931A is the startt of the VIN, could be a possibility of having the CDL from the factory, but no lever to activate, couldn't have a real good look under it to see though.

My Aug/Sep 2001 had the internals, so you can never tell. Shortly after buying it I assumed I was up for the whole retro fit...until the CDL warning light switch failed and the light started flickering on the dash. This prompted investigation and lo & behold there was the nut on top of the transfer case...
As Outback 1 described, this was the route I took. I used the Ashcroft shifter kit and a modified D1 output housing.
