Thread: Fuel Pressure in the filter

I was just searching for FPR rebuild threads this morning and came across this:

There's a post by mturri halfway down which mentions fuel at 6-7 bar on its way to the FPR, so I assume that the standard fuel filter is already coping at high pressures.

In a 110 Defender Td5 the fuel filter is on the low / no pressure side of the pump , there are 4 pipes on the fuel pump, one (1) is only from the pickup & goes to the filter, then from the filter back into the pump housing (2), then the fuel from the filter goes thru the actual pump & comes out of the housing (3) to the Fuel pressure regulator on the back of the head. Unused fuel goes thru the Fuel cooler under the inlet manifold & back to the filter block ( I dont know why ,
.... anyone ?? I dont think return fuel goes thru the filter it dosent make sense if it does) & then into the return pipe (4) on the fuel pump .

I expect Disco2 to be the same setup. Pumps are different for Disco/ 90/110 because the tanks are different depths but otherwise the same.

Why do you want to use a different pump ??

the standard filter will blow apart at the full fuel pump pressure (about 6-7 bar) try a Donaldson P902976 filter kit, it should take the full pressure but is only 11 micron

Thanks to the two people that gave a answer, one yes and one no, I been reading on the RAVE the V8 runs 3.5 Bar straight through the filter to the engine.... SO anyone.... is it possible to run straight through the stranded filter ??? to the engine and do away with un-needed pipes and a better pump like a Bosch 044 ($150) that will last longer and keep better pressure. I do know that Mr Land Rover put it is there for a reason for the LP side, but $400- $600 for a pump I have gone though 3 in 4 years and needing another now, there has to be something better.

There are 2 pumps in a TD5 fuel pump.
The low pressure pump is at 10psi. This feeds the fuel filter.
Fuel returns from the filter back to the high pressure pump and it runs at 58psi and sent to the engine.
The fuel filter only ever gets to 10psi.
To change pump set up you will need to have 2 pumps, also you will need the correct flow rates to match. LP pump is 30L hr, HP pump is 180L hr.

What fuel are you buying?

How low do you regularly run the tank?


Expected reality from a Fuel pump - Minimum 100,000km if looked after.

Two were VDO ones ( so it said on the box maybe a rip off) one was a cheap one that lasted the longest. Talking of fuel i was only using Gull 20% Bio for a long time, the last cheap pump was using BP. makes me think now maybe was the fuel. Try never to go below a 1/4 tank had the light on a couple of times.
Getting a few symptoms of the pump going now. Never thought about the Fuel

Bio is not recommended.

And Gull is pretty ordinary!
