    Engine modification question

Hello everyone, I live in North Dakota, USA. I have a 2004 Discovery II V8 Petrol engine. I am going to try and gain a little more power (20-40 horse)out of the engine by performing some modifications such as a different cam, etc. I was wondering if any of you have done this, and whether or not you had to do any modifications to the computer such as a performance chip to be able to gain the use of the modifications? In the US when one asks on the various Land Rover forums you are automatically told not to do it and it can't be done. I see various performance parts available in England and Australia where it seems more popular to do engine modifications. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The ECU copes with some changes..
    Too wild will need retuning

Will be interested to see what everyone says on this topic. I am not so much interested in hp but would love a bit of extra torque. After driving diesels for the last 2 4wd's and now coming back to a V8 Disco I am surprised at the lack of torque.
I really don't want to start stripping the motor down just yet but maybe an exhaust upgrade or something???? I have heard that the performance chips on the V8 does very little.

Mike is correct with the port/polish. The insides of the V8 is very rough and I reckon a good polish would do a lot.

Yes, pretty cool that we can compare modifications and such clear around the world! All we have primarily over here are petrol cars as they never allowed the TD5 to sell here due to emissions in the DII. There are a few where people have put in a TD5 from earlier models but that is all, so we have to deal with the petrol version.

Thanks everyone for your replies so far. I planed on a port and polish and matching the intake up to the heads. I plan on using a stage 2 cam from Crowly or another one I found from England. Since these are nothing more than a modern Buick V8 we do have access to some of the basic performance parts. I also plan to try and find a set of headers some where and better exhaust. My issue is that after performing the work I wont see any gains due to the ECU wont allow it. There is no where in the US that will tune it. Not enough demand I guess. Do you guys do your own tunes, or do you have to send it in. I do my own on my 392 Hemi Dodge Challenger where by I use a Diablo, similar to the Nanocom I guess. Thanks again for any help.

Most of the basics have already been covered.

You might be able to get more HP by using a different set of injectors and a different ECU (megasquirt or something). Your best bet will be to go down the usual petrol tuning routes of cam, piston pocketing, etc...

It'll be worth having a look to see what the TVR guys do with the Rover V8 lump as they typically use different cams.

Ultimately, an LS3 conversion might be the best route...

Most of the pommy tuners now offer 5L or more to any state of tune you like,, dry sump? Yes Sir! 8K redline? No Problem!
The rumour is the Discovery fuel maps were made so they never offered the HP the RR's made. sounds like something BMW would do,,

One of our members has already installed a 5.2 Pommy torque monster,, and got better fuel economy into the bargain

M R Automotive in QLD have a nice range of fairly mild cams to suit the V8's (the same stuff is available from the UK)

you should be able to pull maybe 10% more out of the V8 lump without having to replace the existing sensors injectors or ECU and without doing any other major engine surgery.

I'd start with sorting the heads, then the exhaust then the intake. As the heads will be off its only about an extra half days work to replace the cam (which typically starts to want attention by the 150-200K Km mark anyway).

I would start by letting it exhaust better. (Also check the induction before the airbox)

Here are some pics of the Disco2 exhaust manifold outlet into the exhaust system. It can be done better, and I would suggest the Disco1 had a better setup and I suspect the Range Rover P38 is better also.

    Disco2 exhaust manifold:

    Disco2 exhaust pipe:

This is how the Disco1 approached the same exhaust manifold outlet:

Or if you want to go old school, this is the Defender/County/Stage1 setup which probably still flows better than a Disco2:

    Cheers
