    Tipped my TD5... :(

    hi all.

i had a dirt-road accident on the weekend which ended up with my disco on its drivers side after a head on front impact that didnt deploy airbags.

it stayed in that position for about 10-15 minutes. then got it snatched back on its feet. Oil had leaked, mostly on the engine cover. i wasnt worried about that at the time, all i wanted was for her to re-start and take me and the family and the camper trailer (which was setup 15 minutes away) back home on a 300km trip. Maybe i asked too much but.. SHE DID IT..

anyway, after we got her on her feet it started first go but with white smoke blowing out the exaust. i let it run for 10 mins and decided to try and drive it. 10m later white smoke was really dense now, so i put in nuetral and this thing just revved to the max with a huge cloud of white smoke, out of fear, i took the key out and jumped out of my broken window, engine stopped when the revs came back down.

So i tried another restart and all was good with a little white smoke. after a while everything seemed to be normal again. I made it home, no loss of power no visible smoke but a lot of cosmetic damage..

Now, when i start it cold white smoke still blows and i feel a shudder when i slowly rev in nuetral. it seems like an easy fix but dont know where to start, not that it can get back on the road but just wondering

Sorry for giving a headache, but just thought i'll share this.

    I want another TD5!

Hiya man sorry to hear about this, I had a diesel P38 that did something similar in Scotland. The situation was slightly different, it was on it's roof all night but what was making the smoke and the shuddering was oil that had drained into the turbo.

I'm not sure what the fix was, I got over the car and put it on ebay but I do remember it being oil and turbo related if that's any use to you.

To be honest I'm not sure what to suggest as to a solvent to get rid of the oil because there are some pretty delicate bearing and mechanical seals in a turbo. A strip down and degrease would probably fix the majority of the smoke, also worth doing your charge pipe and plenum chamber at the same time.

One of my favourites for getting the cooling system clean all the way through is to use half a dozen dishwasher tablets in your coolant for a few days then wash it out. This is great if any oil has found it's way in there at the same time as the turbo, it will also break down any emulsified mayonnaise and sometimes scale build up inside the system.

Oil in the turbo is very common cause for a runaway engine you were lucky it stopped when it did some interesting posts on the forum about them. I would just take the inlet hose of and clean out any oil in the hose and turbo with a rag put it back and let it idol for a while before bringing the revs up. There are some good people here who will know what to do

It is burning oil and the peaking of revs was the vehicle running on its own oil, you're lucky the motor did not rev it's guts out and destroy itself.

The engine most likely had a lot of oil migrate up into the rocker cover area when the vehicle was on its side. There was a lot of oil up on top of the head/rocker cover space. Then when the vehicle was started some got into the crankcase breather as soon as the valve and injector mechanisms started throwing it around. The oil got sucked into the air inlet, turbo, inter-cooler and into the plenum and then into the cylinders.

If the engine sounded ok when you started it at home I would give the air inlet tract a good clean. Clean the hoses, the inter-cooler any pipework that takes air to the engine, you will need to use detergent or a solvent. Make sure every thing is dried very well and blow out the inter-cooler really well before putting everything back together. You don't want any water left for the engine to suck in and you don't want solvent fumes for the engine to run on and run away much like it did when it revved up on its on oil on you. You should also wash out the crankcase breather and the PCV will need to be looked at, take the rocker cover off and give that breather area, hose special attention.

    Good luck.
