Maybe someone who knows what they are doing could look at this....

As per my signature, I have a hilux surf and a long time ago on a forum for that car, it was identified that there was a resistor (?) that controlled the movement of the needle and this could be swapped for another type that enables the gauge to operate a lot more accurately, without the big pause in the middle, so as the temp goes up, so does the gauge...no false readings.

Does the disco have a similar system?

    Cheers all.

Got a TM2, Thanks to all for the advice
Ended up fitting temp sensor to coolant outlet housing bolt after trying it in various locations. TM2 temperature seems to fluctuate more on outlet housing so I figure its influenced more my coolant temp?
Sleeved sensor in 6mm pipe insulation as only the contact point should read.

Perhaps I am a bit late--- 2230 where I am and several REDS.
    However---------------
First. The thing I noticed on my V 12 Series 2 Jag was the low oil pressure not the high water temp.
Second. I have been flying since 1966. DC'3 had few warning lights; then warning lights were grouped below the instrument (CHT/OIL TEMP/OILPRESS/FUELPRESS to draw one's attention to the trouble.
Third. Master caution warning panels were introduced where the Master Warning Light illuminated right in front of your eyes and drew one's attention to to the caution light in the panel and then to the appropriate gauge.
Fourth.----I have fitted ( to my beloved Disco) a low water (cooolant) system after two overheats, it flashes and beeps bloody loudly.
PreviouslyI first noticed was the A/C had turned off and on the second occaision it was not high temps but repeated coolant losses. Many hose changes later I fixed the BASTARD!
The first time I did notice (after the event) the gauge had gone up but no red light.
Wot am I saying---- ( after a few REDS ) the Disco gauge is well known for not moving as it is with many other makes. I have scanned gauges for 45 years in aviation and realize that an audio warning is good such as a bloody great bell/whistle or kick in the arse.
For those who do not believe -------------I have had one complete hose change and several I have done myself, two radiators and two water pumps.
Last trip was Widgee near Gympie QLD to Darwin and return. There are a few posts on the front tail shaft and its "falling out!"

    See Ya

Sometimes computers are good, sometimes not so good

    Cheers for that answer....

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Some pics of my coolant system monitoring layout.
The first one shows the temp gauge sitting under the AC controls, where the cup holder used to live. Dang that red dust, just sticks to everything.

The second shows the low coolant sensor in the top hose.

The third shows the thermistor flange bolted to the head where the top hose attaches.

That looks like an interesting little unit, any idea of an approximate cost?

Does anyone know how hot is too hot? Tis great to see what the temp is really doing, but when do I start to panic? I have the V8, but i guess the same would apply to the TD5

    Exclamation Vague gauge!

I have had the dreaded "I'll wait till it's too late" for the gauge to register, from my temp gauge.
It seems though that other instruments, Nanacom whatever, read the temp OK, are they fed by the same sender unit as the dash gauge?
If so is it direct or is there something (like a computer) relaying the message or modifying it?
If not why can't I get my gauge simply rewound to reflect the incoming reading more accurately, it's just a matter of X ohms = Y reading, when it becomes X+1 the gauge should move, Y1.
I would prefer not to have to hang different bits and pieces everywhere, bloody well prefer not to have to buy them as well.

    Cheers

    Mike
