    What to clean bits with?

    Hi All

Going to rebuild the front double carden joint on my 03 D2, in the past I have used Kero or Turps to clean parts down before re-assembly, which is the best, or is something else better and do they leave a residue.

    cheers

Being cheap, I use diesel. It's a lot cheaper than kero.

I also find that the dirt settles out leaving the diesel clean for re-use at a later date. Just decant off the clean diesel.

After cleaning, I use a compressed air source to blow the parts dry(ish).

White Spirit is ideal, (it's what is usually used in parts washers) but I haven't bought any for a fair old while, so like Ron I just use diesel.

I didn't realise it was white spirit that was used in parts washers. I have a 20 litre drum of it for my Coleman stove (well, a bit less than 20 litres now )

    parts cleaner.

Ron , Save your white spirit for your stove. Costs a lot and your stove won't run on diesel. Regards Nick.

The fluid often used some time back was trichlorethylene, works very well, however is a known carcinogen and also removes oils from your skin if in contact with you.
There is available non combustible cleaning fluids. Try contacting Radum, they sell parts cleaners & I believe the cleaning fluid

Back in the mid-Sixties when i was a trainee radio tech, we used it to clean the transmitters at the HF radio transmitting station at Doonside. It was sprayed into the transmitters with electric sprayguns.
