Oil leaks (lots of pictures in here if you are on slow internet)

I am trying to figure out where my discovery is leaking from. At first I thought it was leaking from the trans somewhere. But after intense degreasing, and watching like a hawk, I cannot find any transmission fluid. However, it looks like somewhere around the transfer box, and up the front of the auto trans area, which seems to be engine oil. Coming from somewhere on the passengers side. Also looks like front diff is leaking a bit as well, but that could just be run off from the leak mentioned above. Oil seems to spread a long way! I do not like my baby leaking! But no idea where to start in fixing it. Looks like may have been leaking for some time as lots of caked on oil around. Most of which i managed to clean off when degreasing. Engine oil is at least easy to keep topped up. The other is a bit harder.

Some photos of roughly where it seems to be all coming from.

    Hi!

The engine oil leak could be a loose spin on filter, this is surprisingly common , or the turbocharger return line flange gasket where it bolts under the turbocharger.
The transfer case leak is very likely the intermediate shaft O rings, or the input seal. Again, a very common sight.
The rear of the transpan looks suspect, too. A service kit will sort that out, also give you a chance to check the trans oil and filter condition. The other possibility is the rear extension housing gasket where it meets the main case. Seen a few leak there, too.

thanks hopefully the engine oil leak is one of those common things.
yeah it is a bit suspect at hte back of the transpan there, i checked trans fluid levels and very full, and looks a good colour. shot out at me with force! think it might be over full? I topped up the transfer box as levels were low. I think that leak will be first on my list. Service kit sounds like a good place to start.

Trans fluid level is a bad thing if it is very high. Was it running in park or Neutral, on level ground?

I'm Sure you'll sort it out L You'll need a T27 Torx bit to remove the filter assembly, doing a trans service is quite a bit easier in the D2 than the D1, which is good.

yes, same deal as a dipstick model, you can overfill these slightly by 500ml or so and won't hurt.

Give it a good steam clean and then run the car, leaks are much easier to detect that way.

Re: Oil leaks (lots of pictures in here if you are on slow internet)

I had the same symptoms on my D2. Turned out to be diesel leaking from the fuel pressure regulator. Its also just above the auto and hard to see and get to. Found it when i went under the car while it was running with a LED flash light.

Are you sure its oil thats leaking ?

Does look more like diesel than oil. I'm with lavingia - fuel pressure reg.
