Had another intersting drive in the Disco

Deb and i where aout and about yesterday avo and driving along we heard and felt a hell of a bang then scrapping noise then it stopped just like we had run something over but noothing was on the road so i pulled over left the engine running and looked all around and under the car nothing not a dam thing i lifted the bonnet and checked everywhere i could see and nothing not a thing could be seen, the car was running perfect nothing amiss so we drove on. We got to our destination and pulled up turned the car off went into the shop, came out around 20 minutes later checked under the car again and all good so i started the her and WHOLEY **** what a noise so i turned her off everything bad was running through my mind and Deb was standing in the door of the shop telling the woman behind the counter ahhh it just my car again . I pulled the bonnet as the sound was from the engine bay and i was looking everywhere could not see a bloody thing so yes i did it i started her again and yep got the same almighty sound and it was coming from the front of the engine then i remembered reading threads on here about the harmonic balancer, i looked down to where it is suposed to be and well there it was nestled nicely between the viscous fan and the pulley, i reached down (BLOODY HOT) and pulled it out went straight to see Chris the mechanic and showed him, he smiled and said "ive seen this before but not as bad as yours) the bolt sections had snapped off with the weight he got another one in and we had it changed yesterday avo in 1 hour, now the amazing thing was the onlly other damage was 1 blade of the viscous fan has a crack in it so iam sorcing another now.

You are a very lucky man! I only hope your mechanic got the bolt torqued up properly, it requires a bloody big torque wrench. If it's not done up, it'll come lose and you are in for a world of pain then.

Yeah 400NM's thats a bloody lot isnt it, actually when he undid the bolt it wasnt as tight as it should have been, he was a little shocked at that

Same thing happened to me on a Pajero, had the timing belt done and the mechanic didnt tighten it back up correctly, lasted about 12-18 months then it all went bad, bent the crankshaft just slightly and cost a heap to fix.

I ended up trading the car in on something else. But it was not in a good way.

    Hope your's ends up alright.

Sounds to me a few of these dastardly little creatures are letting go of late? Should they be changed out at a certain age/kilometer?? As a preventative measure rather than reactive??
