Thread: TD5 filters

Quite often the cheap kits end up using blue box "cooper" filters.

These are a dodgy knock off of the proper "coopers" in the black & red boxes (note the ""s" on the name.). They (cheapies) often split the walls, or have pinholes, and no valves.

A mate who services forklifts (etc) for a living, won't touch them, despite having them supplied for him. He reckons they get the knockoff filters for about 50c. Your engine is worth more than that.

Not sure about the Bearmach stuff though.

I always use Heather and Mario at roverlord now. You pay a bit more, but get the right stuff, and often delivered next day.

Re the TD5 rotors ive tried a few and the only ones that seem any good are genuine LR or Ford rotor filters. Turn engine off & the genuine keeps spinning for about 45seconds, the knock offs stop straight away, hardly doing their job .

As for the air, fuel & full flow oil Bearmach, Coopers or Ryco are fine.

Filters are not filters.

MANN+HUMMEL (MANN FILTER) make the OEM filter for the bypass centrifuge (rotor) - i.e. this is the one that gets sold with LR or Ford branding.

Not sure on the others. In general, Donaldson, Fleetgard (Cummins) and MANN+HUMMEL are the 3 largest (OEM) filter companies in the world and guarantee their filters to be OEM quality or better.

Personally these are (usually) the only 3 brands I use.

Call tony at Karcraft and they have a German filter kit of Mahle and OEM filters. Best price I have found. I get an auto filter kit included that comes in a bearmach box bit from memory has a LR sticker inside but don't quote me on that.

Mahle was one of the OEM manufacturers and the standard oil filter is a tad shorter then the Mann one. Makes changing them a stack easier.

If you are talking about the centrifuge then you are incorrect. That is not to say that the Mahle product is not good quality. However the smaller size makes me worry - at minimum you would expect a smaller soot capacity.

I use only factory filters. It's expensive, but so is my Discovery.

Ages ago one of the fellows on D2Au compared a heap of air filters including LR, Coopers etc and the factory filter had the greatest surface area. Admittedly there is more to evaluating air filters. Likewise I'm also not convinced all centrifuges actually spin up properly, including the Cooper unit, so again I stick to LR's unit.
