Went into the local Landrover dealer today, was given three options:
Bad: Cheaper to buy entire new timing case assembly than individual parts, so that plus labour = $880 for a fitted new VC with a nice spare timing cover
Worse: Timing cover is damaged, new timing cover and labour = $1400
Worst: They can't remove the timing case without pulling the head, off it comes, valve grind and de-coke, new gaskets, new timing cover = $3000 approximately.
So, I figure I'd be unlucky to have damaged the timing case, and even unluckier for them to have to pull the head. So looking at just under $900.
Given that I'm not real flash on the spanners, but not terrible, should I suck it up and pay the stealers (who aren't really stealers, $3000 for head off isn't bad) or do I dive in at somewhere between the deep and shallow end and do it myself?
