It might be a steep price, but Slunnie offered me advice when I was looking to purchase mine, and doesn't hesitate to offer advice, so I'm forever grateful for that. For now I just have to get my backup vehicle (toyota :( ) on the road as it's been sitting in the carport for a while.

Had a squiz today, removed all the bearings that had welded themselves onto the plastic bits like the battery cover, etc. Radiator definitely needs a clean, and a careful check over and some very light screwdriver-ing to open some of the sections. Belt isn't going anywhere fast, has burring along the edges. Rest of the pulleys look okay. Coolant seemed lower than I remembered it last however we have had colder weather recently which gets the fuel cooler O-rings leaking, and it could also be that the header tank was actually clean enough to get an accurate reading :angel: stone cold engine temp probably helped too so coolant got a top up.
Hopefully it's not long before it's up and running, considering retiring the Disco as my daily drive and keeping it as more of a toy.
I bet that Kylie won't sound anywhere near as awesome cranked for volume in the Echo :DQuote:

Went into the local Landrover dealer today, was given three options:
Bad: Cheaper to buy entire new timing case assembly than individual parts, so that plus labour = $880 for a fitted new VC with a nice spare timing cover
Worse: Timing cover is damaged, new timing cover and labour = $1400
Worst: They can't remove the timing case without pulling the head, off it comes, valve grind and de-coke, new gaskets, new timing cover = $3000 approximately.
So, I figure I'd be unlucky to have damaged the timing case, and even unluckier for them to have to pull the head. So looking at just under $900.
Given that I'm not real flash on the spanners, but not terrible, should I suck it up and pay the stealers (who aren't really stealers, $3000 for head off isn't bad) or do I dive in at somewhere between the deep and shallow end and do it myself?
Muppet, you will need to remove the head. :(
Timing case has to be removed with head off. Good thing is it is time now for some steel dowels and a bo peep at the bores etc. (Not that you'll find any problems there). The job is entirely do-able yourself, there is a really good step by step tutorial from Psimpson7 in the good oil about Td5 head on and off.
My personal opinion, unless you have some higher km (250K+) and excessive carbon in the ports/ valve stems etc then a full head rebuild isn't necessary. How many km has it done?
Don't worry, a used timing cover is reasonably cheap I should imagine, and head gasket kit etc etc isn't all that bad. No special tools required either.

Is that Head off regardless or head off if the timing case has to come out?
It's done about 235k kms, haven't had any cooling issues.
If I have to take the head off then I figure I'm mad not to look into things like cleaning the carbon crap out, maybe de-EGR, steel dowels, etc but I'm hoping I can get away without it for now.

Hey, unfortunately head off to get at the timing case, and sump too. At least at 235K you can 'fix' all the looming issues like head dowels and oil pump bolt, timing chain guides (Replace them, unusual to fail but have been known to happen) and clean out the inlet manifold...rest of the engine will be like new at these KM.:)

its not going so its going to have to be tilt trayed anyway, get in there and get it apart and see if it needs a new timing cover if its just the bearing and the boss is ok buy a carton some meat and a copy of the rave, advise your mates who are guns on spanners that there just happens to be some beer cooling in your fridge along with some meat that will be introduced to a hot plate ready for consumption if the works done by the time the beer is cold.
I've seen engine rebuild and installs done in less time than it takes for a carton to chill in a fridge.
at $3k for a head off/on it would be cheaper for you to say
"hey dave, If i pay for the flights, get you to and from the airport, buy the parts, house and feed you would you mind bringing a few spanners on the flight as luggage and doing a head and timing cover?"
