$3k is for new timing case, head off, gaskets, clean up of under the head and labour. Considering some of the prices i've seen that's not too bad.
I've been put in contact with a local landy nut, and I've got a mate who's a diesel mechanic so if it is infact time for the head to come off, that's exactly what will happen.

Our price to replace a Td5 head gasket including Labour at $105/hr and all machining, coolant, sealants and Elring gaskets and genuine head bolts etc et c is about $2300 drive in drive out. The new timing case obviously will be on top of that, as will the sump gasket and less than an hour to do that job, too.

3k sounds pretty good for all that at a workshop price IMO.

didnt realise that included replacing the timing cover with the new one.....

I read it as

$3k for head on/off + the prices for the options on the timing cover.

$3k all in including a new timing cover is pretty good going especially since you'll get warranty on workmanship with it.

If I can get away without needing a new timing cover then that's what I'll do for now, as apart from that I haven't had a single issue with it, I'm about to head back to uni, etc etc timing just doesn't work out (pun intended) but I'll pull the head, do the gaskets, oil pump bolt, etc etc when I have some time off.
BUT.
If the timing case is damaged, I'll probably end up doing it myself as
a) it will be so sweet to drive once it's done :D
b) I've got a mate who is itching to come and pull the head on a landie just so he can laugh at all the stupid things (plastic dowels)
c) I'd learn a bucket load and I'd have the personal sense of satisfaction of having completed reasonably major work
d) I'd know that it's good for the next several hundred thousand kms
3) I don't have 3 grand and that was only an estimate :D
So right now I'm hoping I don't have to, but if I do then there's not much I can do about it except get on with it, as I want my bloody landrover back.

Well.
Thanks to Xtreme I was put into contact with a local landrover-er who came and had a squiz.
Judged that despite my wishes to do it myself, at the moment it's just not practical with family goings on, university and the fact that I need to get it on the road again ASAP as it's my daily drive.
So today I watched (and wrenched the steering wheel with no PAS) as it was put on the back of a flatbed :(
But, hopefully this time tomorrow I'll know exactly where I stand, and parts can start being ordered in.

Tis a sad day when your Disco goes on a Flatbed :dbcry:

She'll be back bigger and better ;)
