    Oil Cooler 2004 TD5 Mystery

Please don't ask why I have just noticed it.However when checking my Cooling hoses I noticed that there is no outlet pipe from the Oil Cooler Housing Assembly. The outlet pipe has a rubber blank secured with a clip. The Oil cooler return pipe has been cut close to the support at the rear of the engine. The other end has not been cut but of course has no hose on it. The radiator bottom hose is a right angled pipe with a take off for the fuel cooler and a small rubber hose either end to connect to the radiator and the thermostat.
I have had the car since new and have in the past towed a heavy off road caravan and have recently travelled fully loaded from Sydney to Cairns all without any overheating problems. The only work carried out near the oil cooler was the replacing of the turbo.
Would someone please confirm this is a mod of some kind and not the work of a rogue mechanic.

    Oil Cooler Myster Solved

After checking with AULRO SEARCH, I should have done this before posting the thread. All is OK it appears it is a "mod" ????Possible reason that my car was purchased on South Africa, a thread from S.Africa had the same set up and the person with the question in OZ had purchased a second hand car that maybe was a RSA import. Nothing in the answers gave any clue to why this different setup in late D2's. Perhaqps someone could explain???

hi len, common enough to see this in the 2004 d2a, you will also have a different rectangular shaped fuel cooler, too.
this is a local thing, not due to a personal import as far as i am aware.

If you have removed your EGR then that OIl Cooler coolant outlet pipe can be blocked off and about 2 meters of associated plumbing can be removed as well.

On my Td5 Defender a hose went from the oil cooler around the back of the engine, along the inlet manifold to the EGR cooler than back along the inlet manifold to a 4 way joiner under the Expansion bottle, Replaced that 4 way with a 3 way brass T , & put a silicone hose & alloy bung on the oil cooler.

The oil cooler still gets full cooling as it basically sits in the water gallery,

you will find the cooling system easier to bleed as a bonus.

pull all the useless crap off - less to go wrong.

    Oil Cooler Mystery

Thanks guys for putting my mind at rest that all is OK with my wagon. The next problem is that Iwant to change the lower radiator pipe hoses one between the radiator and the pipe and between the pipe and the thermostat, and the two hoses between the other end of the thermostat and the coolant pump by-pass pipe and the coolant pump feed pipe. These are all different to the RAVE diagrams.Any help with diagrams or part no's please. I have tried a spares service but they have no record of what JustinC callsthe TD5 2a.

Len, all you should have to do is supply your VIN number, they should be able to sort it out surely

If not, PM the VIN to me and a list of the hoses you require and I'l try and help.

Fling me your email by pm and ill send you my receipt from LR direct when I ordered a full set of hoses and replaced then.

A nightmare job to unclip the spring hose clamps. Ended up using the Dremel on some. Replace with worm drive clamps.
