    High EGT's

    Question regarding high EGT

The max I have seen is around 760 degrees pushing it up a hill with the trailer on
On my last 2 trips I have maxed out a 995 degrees under moderate throttle pulling up a hill
I first noticed it with the A/C on pulling up a rise at 110kpm set on the cruise, no trailer topping out at 850 degrees??

What is the liklihood of the probe misreading?, Nanocom live data shows nothing out of the ordinary.
I would have thought at those temps I would be kicking out a fair bit of black smoke, but there is only a light misting on heavy throttle

Vehicle is driving as it has always done, with no power loss etc

Cleaned all sensors, changed air filter, ecu plug clean

    Any thoughts

Hey those figures sound wrong to me. All I can say is that with my probe in the exhaust manifold itself (ie pre-turbo) I get 650ish and I can feel the engine complaining (power drop off). Usually I drive to 550 on the open road. Perhaps yours is over-reading somehow. What does it read when the engine is cold?

Mate, your figures seem all wrong to me. Hitting 995 degrees would mean major engine damage (think pistons turning soft). Seems to me you have a sender probe or an electrical misreading. If I'm realy lazy, I can hit 660. But that's with 23ft of caravan behind me.

I'd be thinking at those temps you'd have a nice molten blob under the bonnet, so yeah. I'm thinking a possible mistake.

    Thanks guys

That's what I was thinking, especially as it has just started happening
Seems to read ambient about right, but it is definately showing higher that it used to
Will order another probe and install that, certainly makes you watch the gauge though

950 deg C and rising was the maximum EGT I saw, trying to see how high the temp would go(with a plug in chip installed)

The EGT sensor is installed according to Auber Instrument instructions. I have no reason to believe the sender or guage is faulty of sending false readings.

    Plug in chip now removed

Can still hit EGT temps above the recomended 703 deg C with the foot flat to the floor but not the 950+degrees seen with a chip installed.

    Cheers,

    Jason

Mine has gone to 1050 degrees (pre turbo, foot down up hill towing caravan), will absolutely race up to 900, hate to know how long I was holding those temps before I put the gauge on..

Though now it is quite frustrating as there is no where near as much power while keeping the EGT's under control...

Standard ECU maxxed out at about 780 degrees

I have to say though, as soon as I take the foot off the loud pedal the temps race back down to zip.

These days I just use the power as needed and try to back off as soon as possible to prevent too much heat transfer.

Glad I'm not the only one with these excessive temps with chip/ECU re-programming...

P.S. Is an auto, have aftermarket flee flowing exhaust, D2a intercooler and new MAF.

The tip of your egt probe isn't touching metal? That is, pushed against the inside of the manifold? In my work, I see this a fair bit and it can give you higher than normal temps

Doesnt surprise me with a plug in/ piggy back chip. They trick sensors into allowing extra fuel etc.rather than let the sensors do what they were intended for. There is no way a Nanocom will tell you anything relevant with a plug in/piggy back unit.
IMO they are bad news for any vehicle.

I could never exceed 640 pre turbo on std ECU. With a MSB ECU upgrade reaching 900+ was easily achievable until the bigger IC was fitted.
Following the bigger IC 750 to 780 working hard at 130km and a trailer on a 40+ day wasnt uncommon. I had the alarm set to 750 and backed off when it activated.
Normal cruising the EGts were stable around 480

Check your boost is set correctly, IC hoses are good and not leaking, Air filter is clean.

    cheers.

I have a stock D2a with TD5 Auto, and Auber pyrometer with probe upstream of turbo. I have had the probe installed for about a month now.

Cruising at 80-100km/h, it will sit on 450ish degrees. If I stomp on it it will get into the 600s.

Towing our 20ft boat makes it work much harder, not hard to get into the 600s, I have only seen into the low 700s once (then backed off).

Amazing how gear selection makes a huge impact on EGTs. When towing on a flat section of road at 85km/h. In D with torque convertor locked will see EGTs of high 500s, same road in 3rd with torque convertor locked will see EGT stabilise at 450 degrees (with higher RPMs obviously). It has totally changed how I drive the car.

    Cheers,
