Check it hasn't got a slipped liner!
Probably worth slipping a cam and lifters in while it is stripped down that far.
I've had my D2 for over 2 years now and it's done just on 191k km, head gasket has had it.
Anything I should be doing while it is in getting sorted especially when the head is off, especially in terms of future longevity?
I'm sure I'm far from the first to have this happen (nor the first to regret not getting a landcruiser..)
Have new rad and hoses coming over from John Craddock as part of building the car into a reliable camper tourer.
I'm ****ed that the engine has lasted less than 200k kms, interior and exterior of the car suggest that it's had a fairly easy life. At the time I was looking at Discos I was actually steered away from the TD5 for this exact reason!

200K is good for a V8 D2 head gasket's. How long do you expect composite materials to last in that environment? The prevalence of P38, and D2 engine issues are related to their high running temps. I would research fitting the 78degree thermostat and either replacing or rodding out the radiator, too.
I have had to replace head gaskets on D2's as low as 60,000km in the past, most don't get to see 200K without external coolant leaks at the very least.
LPG ones are worse for HG failures IME.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Get a freelander thermostat, 82degree and a softer bypass spring. Took mine from running at 94 on the highway, 96 in city and idle at 98 or more to 87 all day every day.
If you are not going to put top hat liners in,, make sure everything is flat, and your cooling system is perfect, research head tensions,
a new cam etc would show a marked improvement.

Have heads hardness tested, they can go soft if overheated. Fit ARP studs and follow tension instructions for them, not the books.
Whilst the heads are off, you might as well replace the welch plugs on it. I had a weep from mine at the rear, never seen until the heads were removed
If you need the plugs let me know. I've got most if not all.
OK thanks for the ideas team.
Is this the thermostat you guys are referring to?

New radiator is coming and I'll replace all the hoses too.
I guess I'm a bit disappointed although I knew the reputation of the land rovers when I bought the car. I've had a few cars with well over that many kms and have not have the heads off. One of my rotary engined Mazdas even had close to that many kms on the stock engine!
