    starting probs.

It has been at least a month since any thing went wrong with the disco, so it is now time.I have a problem.
It is a 1999 TD5 auto and it has a starting glitch. It clunks as if it is going to start but that is all it will do clunk. Not the usual click of a solenoid. I have already replaced the contacts in the starter .
If I keep hitting the key and move it into neutral it will start eventually. It is getting harder to start.
Do any of you gurus have any ideas? I was wondering....... earth on secondary earthing on starter or selector switch? Is that called the XYZ switch?
All comments will be welcomed. Regards Nick.
    The starter cable is tight.

Check both the positive and negative battery terminals and body/engine contact points.
While you have the leeds off drop the 3 bolts from the starter contact cover and have a look at the face of the plunger.

If it was in the shifter(xyz) swith I'd expect to see the M & S lights come on at start up.
    Cheers, Kyle

    Hello worane,

It's a silly one, but have you had your battery tested??
The test equipment they have now will tell you how much life is left in the battery.

    Cheers,

    Jason

    starting probs.

Funny you mention M&S lights. I have been getting them on & off for months.
I just get under the car and wiggle the harness on top of the auto box and they go away. Do you think you have hit on something? I am not up to speed with these things. My old J20 jeep has no exotic electronics and I am kind of used to plain simple 4X4 stuff in the jeep. I just love to drive the Landy more.
Will check out the wires tomorrow.Do you mean the plunger on the solenoid on the side of the starter? If so I have replaced the plunger and contact coppers about two months ago.
Thanks for both of your answers and I will have a load test done tomorrow too.

M&S lights only flashing usualy indicate low battery voltage(mostly picked up on starting the first time).
They tend to go away on restart as battery then has a surface charge.
It'll be interesting to see how the load test goes.

M&S lights + the red "T" bar light flashing hints at auto electrical issue.
It may be the inhibitor/selector/xyz switch.
A bit of a read for you... http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...uhb100190.html
There are also a few cases of the harness rubbing through a wire and earthing over the gearbox.
Given the wiggle fixes it this is worth looking into.

The reason I sugest to recheck the plunger is two-fold.
The contact face of the plunger or contacts may be contaminated.
One of the contacts may be loose on the bolt so not getting power through to the internal wire.
    Cheers, Kyle

    Thanks gents all.
I took the truck to Hunter & Cutthill ( after market L/R specialists in Geelong). Which is where nearly any one with more brains than money take a LR.
The out come was a load test which showed a stuffed cell.
$275.00 later I have a whopping 950 cca battery with enough power to take me around Mars and back. The important thing is this morning it fired up straight away. Problems SEEM to have gone away. At least for a while.
I have no doubts that Harness over auto box and XYZ probs are still around and lurking back there just to keep life interesting.
I don't know how to find the ends of the harness or the XYZ switch and as I do not have a hoist available I am not sure where to go next.
I just want to thank all of you who have taken the trouble to help me out yet again. It is the fellowship on this forum which gives me hope for the human race still. Thank you all. Regards Nick.
