Did you pull the torque converter to do the rear main? The reason I ask it can it be put back on in a different position. There should be a trigger tooth (or some sort of trigger) on the flywheel/torque converter. Is it possible this has been refitted in the wrong spot? ( I would imagine there should be a dowel to ensures the flywheel/torque converter always gets bolted on in the same spot).

The flex plate is keyed and can only be fitted in one way. The lead sequence is awkward to get right as the book shows it right way up and from the rear. And you end up upside down and back to front kneeling on crap that will leave impressions in your knees for days. Add to this 2 RH bank leads come from the left pack and vice versa, getting the leads pointing in the right direction and not at each other is another issue. Start from the centre and work out.

You can get the wiring harness plugs/sockets and extend the wiring and relocate the packs but as they run wasted spark, leads run to both banks from both packs so you still need to run the packs in the centre. They'll fit up in the plenum but need to cut out a spot to run the leads and get longer custom made leads.

If it were my vehicle I would proceed as follows:

Get out my timing light. Mark the front pulley at 90° intervals. Draw up a list:

Find out which leads are firing at TDC and reassign them to cyls 1 and 6

Find out which leads are firing at 90° ATDC and reassign them to cyls 8 and 5

Find out which leads are firing at 180° ATDC and reassign them to cyls 4 and 7

Find out which leads are firing at 270° ATDC and reassign them to cyls 3 and 2

Remove the plenum and mark the assigned cylinder numbers in texta on the coils. Refit the leads to the coils at the points you assigned. See what happens. Easier than a trans pull.
To be honest, I was disgusted today to even look at her. I had a rest day to concentrate on business and other people's problems.

Yes I'll give it a go before I pull the box again.I'll pull the fuel pump fuses so it doesn't fill the cylinders with cranking
But i don't believe it's the lead positions on the coil that are the problem persay, when I say that, before I even thought of swapping the coil, it drove to the spot it has been for the last few weeks. So the spark plug leads have always been in the correct position on coil before this problem even started. And well before I replaced the coils and leads. Otherwise for the last few thousand kms prior it would not have run.

The leads and coils I replaced were fitted in the same fashion.
But as you say, it's a lot easier than pulling the box.
I appreciate you time and input.
So will attempt some more over Easter.
(that's If I get time this year, we normally get a lot of landy owners knocking on our door for last minute parts and break downs, seems every Christmas day, New Years Day , public holiday I seem to be the only one open. , sort of like a road side assist but emergency parts)
Thanks again for your advise bee utey
    cheers, Mario

Hi Shane, the torque convertor has nothing to do with the CKP as it pics up it's magnetic signal from the flywheel, the TC is what it says it converts engine torque to the drive line.

But you have cast doubt on the installation now, I have installed the flywheel etc etc before, but this time I was in a bit of a hurry and I may have fitted the parts incorrectly.
Looking back into Microcat see pic

That diagram casts the doubt in my mind now.

    drive plate spacer

then Drive plate note the groove faces towards engine so CKP can run inside of groove to pick up pulse

    Next spigot flywheel alignment

    Then flex plate

    Then
    Tolerance plate

    Next Torque converter

I have feeling during the week long of hot weather lying under the disco in the driveway on my own I goofed it. I was a terrible week to try and do it.
I some how fear that I put drive plate spacer on before the flex plate, then the flex plate and finally the Tolerance plate.
I am now thinking more and more about it and I think there is no other way than to pull it off and see. in fact I am even betting 100 % that's what has happen.
Lesson to be learnt ,is not try and finish things when tired and it's not optimal .

That really sux, I was working on a mitsi doin all the front engine seals and after less then 100km we started losing oil again! Low and behold the very bottom seal was faulty so had to strip everything back off 3 days after I just got it all back together, oh well at least now I feel confident that if needed I can strip the front part of the motor blindfolded on the side of a road if needed lol

I'm ashamed of my mechanical skills, even more so on a public forum

    Smile Relax, maaaaaate.

Chill, Mario, my man. There's a reason for everything that happens. Countless are my mechanical screw ups - so are the screw ups with No 2 son who twirls for a living!

And thank you for being the last line of defence against the franchised horde - your service is second to none.

    Happy Easter to your crew!

Yes, relax Mario and happy easter, but please tell us how the story ends - I've learned a lot and become addicted to the ups and downs...
