    Is my front axle hammered??

    G'day

I have a 04 Td5 Disco auto in pretty good nick with 135k on the clock. I took it off road on a bit of a hill climb.
The right front wheel lifted off the dirt and dropped down under power and I heard a "bang" for lack of a better description.
I didn't think too much of it at the time and drove off just do discover there is no drive once the transfer lock is disengaged.

I select drive with TL disengaged and the front drive shaft spins without much noise at all but there is no drive at all. The car doesn't move.
( I have done a pinion gear on my Defender 300tdi before and this does not sound like that)
When I engage the TL and select a gear there is drive, I assume through the rear axle..
I then lifted each front wheel of the ground one at a time and both spin freely with the tranny in P. There is no noise when I turn the wheels and they both spin freely without any binding.

At the moment the misses is driving it in town and you can hear something is off but not enough to pull up..

Any ideas will be very helpfull.

    Cheers

    Armani

Sounds like a broken axle or diff centre.

    Axle or diff definately.

Most likely spider gears on the diff centre as these tend to be the weakest link on D2 although you normally hear some crunching if it is spider gears. Doubt it is pinion as this is pretty strong in D2.

Axles are good in D2 as well and very rarely break if you don't have a locker, but with absence of noise you may have sheared the axle.

Either way I would not be driving it at all. If it is spider gears then all you have to do is fit a new diff centre. It is actually cheaper to buy a locker than get an original centre. However if you drive with broken gears it will chew out the ring gear and pinion and they will need tone replaced. I was also traveling behind a mate who chose to keep driving after breaking the diff and 50 km down the road it shot a piece of metal out through the diff pumpkin!!!!!!

    Best not to drive

If diff just order an Ascroft ATB or locker. If axles, order Ashcroft axles.
