    Other Tasks Inlet Manifold Off

I have searched and found conflicting advice on whether to clean the gunk out of the inlet ports. A while ago I did the EGR mod' and noticed the gunk in the inlet manifold. Recently replaced the fuel pump that had been down on pressure for sometime. Then the FPR valve started leaking so manifold off and do the lot together. I intend to change the fuel pipe from the FPR to the block, the welsh plugs look good no leaks, there is a run of oil from the injector loom socket back along the upper casing and oil on the inside of the plug., so hopefully this is the loom not a gasket The loom covering; after the plug,is split corrugated maybe the plastic covering was removed to stop the oil path back to the ECU?
Do I need to check out or do other jobs with manifold off, I am not sure about touching the inlet gunk?
    Regards Ollie

    Hey Ollie.
It would not hurt to soak the manifold in a degreaser then go at it with a brush to get all the accumulated junk out of it. Remove the sensor first of course. Maybe you could change the glow plugs (4 off ) while it's off also.

    Cleaning manifold

    Ollie
i would be going a little bit deeper into the source of that gunk in your manifold it looks like you are getting a lot of "Seepage" from the inlet end of the turbo, maybe seals a bit weak there supplying oil to make the gunk.while it's all in pieces you would do well to check the intercooler if it's full of oil too
that's another source of power loss.given the direction of flow the only source of the oil is the turbo.
    hope this helps.

The rocker cover oil breather is also a possible candidate source of the oil. So it isn't nessesarily shot seals in the turbo. That gunk doesnt look too unusual to me, especially considering you have only just got rid of the likely source of it - the EGR. How many Km's on the engine?

Has / does it use a lot of oil? From what you show I'd clean / check the inter cooler before getting too concerned about the turbo. Only if you have a lot of oil in there then you have a potential turbo problem to chase. If your concerned about further oil then maybe consider fitting a Provent but no massive rush.

Clean out the inlet manifild for sure but I know what you mean about the inlet ports, not too sure if I'd want to destabilise that gunk and don't know how far you can reach in there.

    Thanks for the replies

The EGR came off at 120k the intercool was cleaned at a recent radiator replacement and was Reasonably clean. I believe the gunk is from the EGR with normal oil contamination from the crankcase breather. The next job is fitting the Provent I will do the exhaust manifold at the same time. The engine uses very little oil.

Finally got to finishing the FPR replacement, inlet manifold cleaned, fuel cooler stripped, cleaned and resealed. One thing I would do next time is open the four holes out on the fuel cooler bracket, they are too tightly toleranced making it difficult to get the bolts in. I would also run a tap down the inlet manifold - cooler mtg holes out, Even put more of a chamfer on the end of the four bolts. Mine was not easy to refit.
    Regards Ollie
