DISCLAIMER: All activities contained in this farcical attempt at a tutorial that will probably not interest anyone were undertaken by a completely un-professional Muppet. Any attempt to replicate said actions that incurs damage, injury or ridicule is your own fault considering you'd have to be pretty dumb to listen to me
Lots of people ask me (read, nobody) "Muppet, how do you manage to do things with such style, and flair, yet still get the job done safely?"
(Or rather "How are you still alive, but I prefer the above)
Today I set about moving my Sunroof switch from where I didn't want it to where I did want it, the later being the blank switch location.
So first step: Remove all roof pieces, don't consult RAVE (Do consult RAVE). Do not lose screws
Wasn't particularly impressed with the way the switch slot had been cut, I managed to do better with my multi-tool
No those aren't my cuts
Step 2: Look at the wires dangling next to metal with the key in the ignition.
Step 3: Now the Sunroof switch wires need to move about 10cm towards the rear of the vehicle towards the metal frame that helps to locate the switch itself (more on this useless piece of metal later), so with some gentle prodding, fine the metal frame (Same size as the switch) and cut out the headlining from the inside ()
Step 4: Induce severe back pain, several cuts on the hands, lots of dirtiness, swearing, cursing of tight spaces, etc by getting the wires up into the new switch location (probably a better way of doing this, sue me)
Now according all goes to plan you can now refit the entire roof panel thingy, being careful not to lose the screws again, wishing you had a really high arm-rest and all that jazz.
BUT
I discovered (ha ha) on my Discovery that the blank slot on the plastic centre piece and the metal frame are out of alignment by about 3mm
So this has the effect of pushing one side of the switch up by about 1mm, so it doesn't sit flush and doesn't look too crash hot.
So if you're not slightly anal about these things, cool cool, away you go.
But it gave me a right case of the irrits so the best solution I could come up with as my cold closed in, blurring my vision (or was that the dark) and my arms feeling like two damp hessian sacks, the best I could come up with was padding the surround with some dark foam.
There will be a more permanent solution, but I'm trying to work out if I try and file the metal surround back or just cut the plastic plate a bit. Open to suggestions.
So there you have it.
How to cock up a relatively simple job.
For a more professional (and extremely helpful) way to play with the sunroof switches, have a squiz at Urban Panzers site, which I should have done and will do in future when installing my new switch:
www.discovery2.co.uk** Sunroof Switch Illumination
What I will be installing....
Stay tuned for more...
Or don't and do something productive with your time!
Cheers
Muppet
file the metal as it is hidden. If you open the plastic you will end up with an unsightly gap around the switch!Congrats on completing such an easy task in the time you did
HaHaHoHo .
Cheers Scott
PS It really is a very good how to by the way!![]()
