    diesel in the sump

    Hi
I have just started a service got all the filters ready warmed up the disco, pulled the sump plug out and out it came, but smelled funny like kero. wiped the mess off my hand really easily. then looked under the disco and saw the container (cut off 20lt) nearly full. then realized it was half diesel as it should be 8lt oil.

So the question is whats wrong, why do I have fuel in the sump??

TD5 I take it? The diesel is leaking past the injectors seals. You are very lucky it hasn't started running on! Once it does that it will destroy itself very quickly at high revs You need to get it checked ASAP. Search the forum for it. lots of info here.

    Cheers Scott

Injector seals are a quick job, although you need to make up a curved pointy tool lever thingy. I'm pretty sure that's a brand name.

A 5mm allen key with a long handle works fine too. 6mm is usable but doesn't fit under the bridge of the injector all that well.

schuy1...Yes TD5 I had checked oil level last week and it was up and have thought about it thinking a service is due. the car has been running just fine no power loss, economy fine.

stallie.... I have been in the shed for an hour with it apart wondering how the injectors come out, so they just pull out with a lever.

thanks guys I have ordered the seals, I hope to have it done tuesday.

Check the injector bores (where the injectors fit in the head) they can crack or become porous causing the issue you have.

Also be wary of the turbo if you have run on the diluted oil for any length of time it may of damaged the bearings.

I hope at this stage the engine will be ok, as this must have started only last week. it was wednesday this week I noticed the temp getting higher than usual, i have only done a 100 ks since then. i pulled out 3 injectors ready for monday but the other 2 (1&2) wont come out because of the cam. i will have to turn the motor.

You'll need to turn the engine so the peak of the injector lobe is pointing away from the injector so you can remove. You need to pull the fan so you can get a 24mm socket on to the crank pulley bolt.

You'll need to replace the washers as well.

    Cheers

Thanks Paul, I wasn't sure about crank socket size, oh and the washers are also being changed. Are the held on or just burnt on, they seem to be stuck there. Number 3 injector seemed so far to be the problem one as it had fuel in its bore when it came out.

The washers are push fit. You can get them off with pliers but you need to be a bit careful of the injector tip.

You'll need to clean up the barrel of the tips - a light rub with a green kitchen scourer seemed to be pretty effective. With the barrel cleaned the washers go on reasonably easily. I had to use a small ring spanner to get an even push when installing.

Before you reinstall the injectors give the motor a couple of quick spins on the starter. This will blow any pooled fuel out of the cylinders. Then wipe out any junk and fuel out of the injector seats.
    Cheers
    Paul
