swapping manual to auto

Exactly.
Manual to auto is far simpler, as you're removing a whole heap of components.
Auto to manual would require way more parts, and much more work done to install them.
Higher parts costs and higher labour costs.

If you are handy on the spanners, and are willing to take the chance on a buying wrecked auto, then you should be able to the bill down quite low, breaking the other D2 for parts, and selling off any bits you don't need.

There will be some parts that you'd be better off buying new rather than s/h.

Thanks guys. SWMBO was suggesting it as we are thinking of heading off round oz and she isnt that confident driving a stick shift and towing a camper trailer. But i think i have managed to talk her round....hopefully!!!

Still will take a lot of work and $$$ but it would be cheaper / easier to not put the D2 Auto but the D1 Auto as it is valve bod controlled so no need for the ECU.

My Defender has the D2 box converted back to Valve control. Cost them a bomb to do as it is totally custom. Cost me a bomb in repair work to.

If you were to fit a D1 auto into a D2 how would you connect the kick down cable, as the D2 is drive by wire there is no accelerator linkage to connect to?

Hi, i presume you saw this: Differences between Manual and Auto Td5 ECU's , just be aware that adding the clutch switch hardware is not enough, a remap is needed too as to suit the defender as the auto ECU is certainly for D2 otherwise all kind of fault codes will be stored, IMO better get a proper ECU and sell the other.
