    Imaginary noise/ whine

    Afternoon folks.
Just got back from a mad dash to sydney, and I'm certain that I'm going insane.
Stopped to have a look at the Glow Worm tunnel and decided some of the mud puddles looked much more fun
Afterwards, both my passenger and I noticed a seemingly sporadic whine, noticeable only when you were next to something to "reflect" the sound.
Pulled up and checked all the discs to signs of something caught in them, checked the prop shafts, couldn't see anything wrong.
Thought it might have been the birds until it returned a while later.
It's entirely random, can happen off idle, under acceleration, rolling to a stop with no brakes, etc.
Only seems to happen when the vehicle is warm, doesn't sound like pulley noise (Believe me, I'm familiar )
Also seems to a be a bit of a growl and a buzz in the steering cornering under brakes, most noticeable coming down the mountain.
Any hints would be thoroughly appreciated, as the stop and start nature has me baffled and thinking I might just need a good sleep.
First thing I'll do is clean it thoroughly, I find this often helps eliminate lots of the odd noises you pick up after dirty work.
    Cheers

You put that in there just so that I'd comment didn't you Muppet?! Well you're bound to be a bit insane when your mother's a.....nah. Enough of that one.

Anyway. Grumbling wheel bearing perhaps? If you've been playing in muddy water, it might be worth checking.

    I had considered this.
    How would water get in?

No idea how it gets in, but I know I've read more than one story on here of it happening. Same with diffs.

    Hmm...
I do have a weep from the front diff breather in the axle housing...
Other than that the gaiters/boots are fine.

And bring it, I'm stocked up on French insults!

I seem to remember OffTrack mentioning growling on corners being indicative of TC failure on the horizon
It's definitely a 'rotational' type noise, at one point it sounded like someone holding a nail against the rotors.

You must be getting confused with the D1 forum. I'm sure every d1 comes with a membership of the Bearing Packers and Greasers Union judging by the frequency you see D1 owners recommending bearing repacks.

Hmmm looks like it might rain. Best repack the wheel bearings...

get the hose out and give all the wheel/brakes a good clean, then go for a drive and see if it still there.

Hey, at least they CAN repack them, unlike us high and mighty D2 owners who need a new hub
