Mates disco blown head gasket etc...

    Hey Guys and gals,
Have a mate (well my wifes good mate) who has a disco (I think its a D2 - Im a defer bloke)
anyway cut a long story short, hubby up and left her with 3 kids knowing full well that one of the head gaskets was leaking, tonight my missus and X are on thier way to a Scout leader training camp at nowra and X's car overheats and dies, heap of oil under it etc....not good id say....
they still went to the scout shindig, took my puma so all is good and fortunately they were only 30 mins from home.

in short, this is a V8 auto on dual fuel.
Whats the options, exchange/2nd hand engine or rebuild
$$$ are the issue here, Im a fitter so a changing the engine is no dramas, got the gear and the shed.
Anyone with a 'reasonable' engine for sale? Got to freight it to Narooma

    cheers,
    Phil

You may be in luck, as Discoberry has just put his 99 D2 with a top hatted 4.6V8 up for wrecking in the markets.

    strip it and shelve it....

you're likely to make more money off of it as parts than selling it as a non running v8 auto or getting one of those haul away a wreck mobs in.

    as an example...

I recently finished parting out a D1 tdi auto with a wrecked engine and very bad body rust. After flogging all the bits out of it that people wanted by seperating it into its primary metals I got $500 from the scrap metal yard and I still have the chassis to go (it wouldnt fit on the trailer with the bodyshell)

I made about $300 from it from stuff that AULRO-ians wanted from it, netted about the same in useable spare parts for myself.

lets say I got $1k value out of it by stripping it. The local pick up a wreck mobs offered me $150 for it when it was in rollable condition after I'd pulled what I wanted from it.

Not far from here there are a couple of early D2V8autos that unregistered aren't moving for $2500 (And no they're not worth the hassle due to major roadworthy faults, rust, damage and other neglect. I'm quetly confident that they went under in the floods)

    hi Dave,
    cheers for that.
Haven't been down this path before and I was half suspecting that this would be the situation.
    regards,
    Phil

had to laugh at the evilbay name, not a member there but may soon be one
Not to sure about 2nd hand engines in general, have done a few subies OK but these were jap import engines not ones from private wreckers. Im sure that there are probabyl good ones out there but with this ladies luck.......

I take it you have not pulled it down to see the damage yet? Is the thought being that she will just ditch and get another vehicle? If your homework is done with a replacement and the vechile itself is in good order a motor can be cheaper than starting with another 2nd hand car.
    Cheers Scott.
