1. There's a nylon spacer on the cable outer at the lock end that fails, make a new spacer to take up the slack, I made one out of a scrap of copper tube, split and crimped into place.
2. You can get at the lock by cutting the pocket protecting the underside of the lock from the grille, I used a sharpened screwdriver and then pushed the lever.
