    Failure to Proceed

    Hi all.
This is something from a while back, and it wasn't a show stopper but I'm a tad curious as to why it may have happened.
The weekend of the LRE meeting that I attended in Sydney, we jumped in the car in the morning to head off for the days activities. I went to start the Phantom, and just as I hit the starter motor my fingers slipped on the key and it went back to position...I? II?
Anyway, after I tried to re-start it, it would crank fine but it wouldn't turn over. The oil light on the dash had gone out ( I think) but the battery one was still on.
So I popped the bonnet, poked a few things and checked for loose cables or any signs of catastrophic failure, hopped back in and away it went, no dramas since.
Did I temporarily overload the starter or something?
    Cheers

It seems to have a safety setup in the ignition to prevent "double starting". If ,as you did , initiate the start sequence but dont complete you have to turn the key completely 'OFF" and redo the sequence again, Which is what you unwittingly did by popping the bonnet and poking and prodding Both the defender and the Disco do it, although the td5 cant seem to make up its mind as to it should just turn off or have to remove the key and start all over! 9 out of 10 turn off is ok then for some reason it demands I remove and replace the key b4 it will agree
On the defender it seems to be a simple interrupter pin whereas the TD5 appears security controlled related

    Cheers Scott

Mine has done this a few times. You think it has started but it just misses and stalls. When you try to start again, it turns over but no fire.

To fix, I use the fob to lock the doors and then re-open, usually in the ignition. It has always started after this procedure.

I haven't pulled the key out and then replaced, so I must try that next time

Same thing has happened to mine a few times, I understand it is something to do with the exciter ring for the passive immobilizer not energizing correctly, a lock and unlock resets it

Same has happened with me as well, although I have 1 or 2 times had the joy of flashing m & S lights when my hand has slipped off the key when turning, and she hasnt kicked over fully. The procedure of getting out the car, locking, unlocking, getting back in and starting her properly has always fixed it.
