turbo shriek then heaps of smoke

    Hi all,
driving today I noticed the turbo making more noise than usual - whistle rising in pitch with revs and gradually progressing to a shriek. No noticeable loss of power while this was happening.
Then I noticed I was blowing white smoke under partial throttle and heaps I mean HEAPS of black smoke under fuller throttle - then the noise stopped, it started running like a dog, and the smoke was beyond belief.

I have - new silicone turbo hoses, cut webs on exhaust manifold, oversized manifold studs, and the turbo is only 30-35k km old AFAIK (PO told me it was recently replaced when I bought it).

Any ideas? Help? Its my daily driver so I'm kinda (VERY) worried.

    TIA
    Alex

quickly check for excessive oil level, turbocharger compressor wheel freeplay, and delaminated or split turbo hoses.

The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

Oil level is not even registering on the dipstick!!! can't imagine why as there are no leaks even close to being serious enough to have emptied it in two weeks.
Can't check the turbo until it cools off - probably tomorrow.
I don't think it would be the turbo hoses as they were replaced with silicone ones at most 2000km ago.
BTW been working it hard (heavy towing over relatively short distances) over the last 5 days

Sounds like a delaminated hose, but the oil loss is definitely a worry

new silicone hoses delaminated after 2000km?

Certainly is! I can see oil leaks at the front of the rocker cover, and around the breather hose from the rocker cover (leaving oil on top of the rocker cover) but the oil from each of these areas is just staining, not running down the engine, and there are no drips underneath...

    Possibly

If the oil is not leaking it has to be being burnt

Check blowby from oil filler, and as mentioned check turbo

Oil consumption and white smoke/ screeching under boost is quite likely turbo failure related, I would be looking at that first. DON'T start and run the vehicle in case it has a runaway!!

One of our buses at work did exactly that...clouds of white smoke turning black on throttle, the turbo was totally shagged and sucking oil through and burning it.
The insides of the manifold looked pretty horrible and three turbo shady had loads of play with the vanes hitting the housing.
New turbo and a good clean out and she was good as new...

just got the turbo off & that's exactly what I've got. 5mm sideways play on intake vanes & most of them knackered
