    Can you recon/rebuild the turbo?

So, followup from my previous post - turbo completely knackered. Options as I see it: 1. new GT2052S (standard turbo), 2. rebuild old turbo with new internals (can I do this?), 3. VNT turbo (GT2052V)
Ideally I'd like the VNT, but finances are tight, so I'm hoping for a rebuild, so as the title says - can I do this?
    TIA
    Alex

I've found rebuild cartridges for the GT2052V (VNT variant) but not for the GT2052S as fitted to landrover TD5s
I wonder if the cartridges are interchangeable??

OK so I've disassembled the turbo - vanes on both ends damaged, shaft linking exhaust vanes to intake vanes no longer doing so.

I'll have to give it a good clean to check whether new internals will fix it or if there's casing damage & I need a complete new one.

Hard to imagine a turbo only lasting 30k km. Have to contact PO about their claim to it being a new turbo 18 months ago.

Another reason for SWMBO to abuse my car & my choice of car. But I love my disco (and my wife).

    Cool and..

How are you going to balance it?

We had a td5 turbo come apart as a result of lack of balance. That's why we use a Garrett turbo specialist for rebuilds. It's a bit pricey - last one was $730, but piece of mind and guaranteed repair is important.

Other way is to pick a second hand example.

    Good luck

Mark wheel and shaft alignment before and reassemble with the same orientation. Balance is preserved.

Without the final balance they run a bit noisier. Never had one damage itself and I've swapped compressors on many of my own.

Option 4 find a decent second hand unit. There's a few of us who have upgraded to VNT's despite our standard turbochargers being fine. I sold mine a while ago on eBay and it didn't go for very much, you might be able to find a good second hand unit for cheap.

how can a turbo only last 30k ???

do you have EGT gauge ? or keep an eye on boost ?

Mines done 185k and still boosts like new

My land cruiser 80 1hdt went bang at 570,000 klm but had the turbo tested 20k prior before its last trip and it was still within factory tolerances.

if the intake vanes are cactus I'd want a look under the head to be sure theres no damage in there from all the bits being pummeled about. At least undo a glowplug or 2 and give it a colonoscopy.
