Nice
That first cut is a nervous one, isn't it
Be interesting to see how your air filter goes with the snorkel on compared to the 1k cleans previously, and also if your fuel economy changes
Well got a spare few hours and fitted the safari that has been cluttering up the shed ever since I bought the TD5 last year. 1 catalyst was having to clean the filter every 1000 kms!the other was I got sick of tripping over it!
Anyway after the nagging doubts of , Is the damn template correctly aligned and is it drawn correctly
I committed by drilling the first hole
and after the heart started again it flowed along. Dead easy Brudder!
So anyway it all went on and fitted well, apart from the pillar mount which when I opened the packet of bits BOR had parceled up was nowhere to be found! So I did some 1 off manufacturing and got it on the road!
According to the Nanacom the air intake temp is about 5c down on the old reading? So now she looks the goods!.
Cheers Scott

It sure is!Yes I have only done a run to town and back so far which is how I got the temp reading but it seems to run smoother? Will need a longer run to check fuel though. A mate had a 2004 disco and when he put the snorkel on apart from all the extra insects the air filter at 10000 looked still clean and he has as much dirt as I have to travel on.

Hi Scott
If you are worried about clogging the filter with dust there are several options like putting a foam filter replacement in the air box which can be washed out regularly ( genuine filter replacement )
You can also get a foam filter ( pre cleaner foam filter ) that goes inside the top of the snorkel which can be used with either main filters.
I am running both foam filters in my Defender Td5 & Discovery Td5 very happy with the results.
( besides got to be when you can save some money on a service )
Steve
Hi Steve, Yes I am running the foam unifilters in both the TD5 and the 300TDi defender. Have ran the foam in the defender for the last 12 years and find it very good, no fine coatings of dust ever on the inside piping like I used to find with the OEM filters. See the pic of the Unifilter after 1000kms!
And before I get crash tackled about the downsides of foamI have read ALL the fors and against posts about them
But can only go on my end results, 310000km for the deefer so far............
Cheers Scott
Way to go Scott. You got the double bonus of having "Safari" and "Land Rover" embellishments on your snorkel! Mine only has TJM Airtec or similar. Does the same job I guess.
I've just changed an airfilter after less than 3000 kms that showed signs of water ingress and loads of bugs and sand and general crud.
That was what prompted me to shell out the $80 or so bucks for both the ram head cover and the internal sock that is referred to above.
Time will tell how much cleaner this keeps the filter. They're not hugely expensive and the ram head cover looks a bit wanky perhaps but if it helps I'm ok with that.
And you look like a staunch advocate for the foam unifilters so I'll have to ask you about them another day.
I just put a K&N air filter into my bike and I hope it stays good for a long time as it's a PITA to take the fairings and tank off to access the airbox on that machine...Suzuki engineering at its finest. A bit like the LR mob that made the Td5 oil filter a tad tricky to get access to...
Yes I got the Snork and the bullbar at BOR , I was lucky the day I put the Disco in for the rego work they happened to be wrecking 1 with good gear on it, so scored!!Hmm, water in filter box? I was getting that with the standard intake, Will have to keep an eye on that. Yes the biggest prob with rams are the bugs they scoop in! Fantastic if you are doing insect research! I hit a swarm of bees once with the defender and there were like a bucket full in there!
Re the K&N on the bike, I have 1 on the GTR Kwaka and while it appears good, the oil they use seems to dry out quickly, I have to reoil it every 4-5 months even if Im not riding. So a bit iffy or maybe they are supposed to dry?
Cheers Scott
Hi Scott
When we had the locust plague in SA
I got some metal fly screen and cut a piece to go behind the grille on the snorkel and super glued it in place then trimmed around the edge with a razor blade works a treat.
Steve
Thanks for that info Scott. I like your line about insect research, made me laugh. Oops. I think I'm meant to write LOL there...
Have you got the 1000 or the 1400 GTR? I looked at the 1400 when I bought my V-Strom 650 but there were precious few that ticked all the boxes I had. I had my wife convinced that although it was a 1400 it wasn't a hoon bike like a Hayabusa. And how comfortable she'd be back there compared to the last bike she pillioned on - a Kwaka Z750 (no grab handles, seat the size of one butt cheek, etc). If I'd found the right one for under $15 000 I'd have bought it. I should have waited a bit longer as in the end I bought the DL650 from a guy in Melbourne and rode it home to Murgon. Hardly a 'local' purchase.
Anyway, this has taken the thread quite OT but who cares?
The issue with the water ingress into the filter box needs more investigating I think. I might try something creative like removing the filter and putting a Dolphin torch or some other bright torch in there, put the lid back on and then check if there are areas that light is leaking through. It'll be bloody cold in the shed tonight though. At least I won't be lying on the concrete floor - I scored a bargain creeper the other week at Supercheap. It was only about $40. Considerably cheaper than my preferred idea of cutting an inspection pit into the garage floor. Now I just have to watch my nose as I scoot past the diffs.
Thanks for the heads up re the oiling of the K&N. More reading to do still. And the fire needs more wood.
You will always get some water in during really heavy rain. The external drains can only catch so much.
If you remember in time when seeing a bad storm approaching, get SWMBO to lean out and turn the head around, but if it is already raining this is unlikely to be successful, and probably may cause loss of privileges.
On dirt roads anyway the internal Unifilter foam socks block up in a few days. That is why you get 3 in a pack.
If these are what you are talking about, then Mr Unifilter himself told me not to leave them in place except when they are needed, say on a busy dirt road. However they are very effective. I didn't have to change my main filter in my RRC for the entire duration of a trip from Sydney to the Kimberley and back.
I met a dork at Mount Elizabeth Station on the GRR who had a D2 , and wandered over to me asking where he could get a new filter and showing me the most clogged filter I have ever seen. No snorkel, no spare filter.
