    Trolley Jack Weight Limit

Super Cheap gave 1400kg trolley jacks for $20. Is that enough for a D2?

If you are only lifting one corner, it should be OK. If you plan on sticking it under the pumpkin and lifting one end completely, I would be careful. I would hazard a guess that 1400kg is right on the safe limit for a $20 trolley jack.

Get (or use) some axle stands while you are there, a D2 would make a mess if it came done unexpectedly

Not just the lifting weight that needs to be considered

You only jack up half the vehicle at a time usually, so it will just be under the limit. Most probably ok if you want to change a tyre and put the jack under the suspension components near the wheel...

You also need to consider what height a jack goes to. I have a lower weight jack for the front wheel drive vehicles as they have a lower height to start with. But it struggles to get the Disco up to any useful height. The Supercheap jack goes up to 335mm.

For example, Repco has recently being selling a 2000kg jack for under $100 that lifts up to 495mm. Downsides is its size and weight (30+ kg) and the handle doesn't come out, without undoing a bolt.

Maximum axle load on a D2 is 1800kg on the rear axle of the air sprung version. If you do not overload the vehicle than that is the max weight you could expect the trolley jack to have to handle. I have a 2000kg - to be sure to be sure.

Thanks - the height was the bit I missed. Just got axel stands and it's to fit a 2 inch lift and larger tyres so I guess the SCA one is no good. Will check repco too - 20% discount with RAC there too

I've got a similar jack I have had for years and lift the whole arse end of the Rangie ok. It is a bit bent now, and probably needs replacing, but it does fine. Remember you are only lifting the car with it - it either will or won't do it. I have a very strong set of truck stands I then use to hold the car up while working on it, so I don't see an issue if you are doing this with it.

Do you mean the SCA one or the repco one?

The 2.5T ones have a much more suitable height range.

If it is from SuperCheap at least it will be, err, cheap - so why not buy 2? One for each corner...
